Opinion: Are Super Wednesdays really super?

Do you enjoy Super Wednesdays? On a so-called Super Wednesday, all students at Wayland High School get out of school at 12:15 p.m.. While all the students are out to lunch with friends or taking naps to catch up on sleep, the teachers stay in school till 3:10 p.m. – the normal school release time – for professional development meetings at WHS.

Super Wednesdays bring back the familiar excitement of having Wednesdays off while students did hybrid schooling during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is necessary for students to have a break aside from the weekends or school vacations, and I think having this time off gives students a deserved break. Personally, I need time to take a break from school work and studying. I bet that you do too, and that’s what Super Wednesdays accomplish. It gives students the opportunity to go out to lunch with their friends, and take a break from being wrapped up in worrying about their work.

“Super Wednesdays are a great way to release stress when I go with my friends to lunch when I would usually be doing school work,” junior Schulyer Kilmon said. “It is also a great way to hangout with friends outside of school.”

This year, there have been five Super Wednesdays over the span of four months, which were very stress reducing. However, having all of these Super Wednesdays in the beginning of the year makes the second half of the year even more stressful. Super Wednesdays should be more spread out during the year, so that students can have the time they need to unwind throughout the year. After school, my day is full of homework, studying and extracurricular activities. The weekends aren’t much of a break considering the amount of activities students juggle, from school to home life. Super Wednesdays offer an opportunity for students to have a little bit more time for themselves without having to worry about their upcoming tests, and take a quick break to recharge and get through the week. This is important for everyone’s mental health and well-being.

In addition, it doesn’t make sense for all Super Wednesdays to be in the least stressful part of the school year. After the first quarter and half way through the second quarter, the pressure of school increases and managing schoolwork is difficult, yet the support of Super Wednesdays goes away.

WHS should implement six total Super Wednesdays throughout the school year. Three prior to midterms with three after midterms. This way, the special days students look forward to are evenly broken up and balanced. We should have Super Wednesdays in the months of January and March. In January, we are coming off of winter break and it is difficult to get back into the swing of things. As for March, we only have March 29 off due to Good Friday, which varies depending on the year.

Overall, Super Wednesdays are beneficial and leave me with extra time for myself and the things I want to accomplish. On these special early release days, I find myself in a great mood and make use of my day in the way that I want. So, we should spread out these days and find a way to better utilize them.
