Join WSPN’s Alex Evangelista, Edge Wheeler, and Emma Zocco as they explore the top fashion trends for this winter. From timeless classics returning to emerging styles, they break down how to stay stylish and comfortable in the cold.
Sweatshirts:
Patagonia fleece: A fleece is the ultimate way to stay warm this winter. Patagonia has been perfecting their fleeces since the late ‘70s and now offer a plethora of different styles and colors to find your perfect fit. Although the price tag on this is hefty, you can buy a second hand one with the same good quality for a better price.
Blanks: Blank hoodies are back in style, surging in popularity for the second winter in a row. These hoodies are some of the most versatile tops and pair well with almost any bottoms. A hoodie without strings appears more high end and can elevate an outfit.
Quarter zips: Quarter zips come in all different shapes and sizes. You can dress these up, or down, whether you want to layer it for a more casual look or wear it over a dress shirt for a classier look–this is a closet must have.
Pants:
Wide leg sweatpants: Wide leg sweatpants have also grown in popularity over the recent years. These pants provide style while remaining incredibly comfortable. They are very versatile and can be worn at home, to school or to more casual events.
Baggy jeans: Baggy jeans continue to be a popular staple in men’s wardrobes. These wide leg jeans have been increasingly popular for years and this winter is no different. The classic blue denim look is iconic, and you can expect these to be popular for years to come.
Work pants: These pants are made out of materials such as denim or canvas. These types of pants come in a variety of styles and colors and are easy to come by. If you want to stay even warmer you could buy fleece lined work pants. They have a flannel inside that was originally designed for cold working environments and should keep you warm.
Accessories:
Belts: The right color belt can complete the look you’re going for in an outfit. Whether it is a worn-in brown belt with an old pair of jeans, or carefully crafted leather with intricate details, the belt you choose can literally and physically hold your outfit together.
Arc’teryx Beanie: The unique designs and trusted quality of Arc’teryx have made their beanies a winter headwear staple for the past two years. The variety of styles offered allow wearers to match a hat with almost any outfit. While the price tag is on the steeper end, ranging from $50-$95 depending on the style, the high quality garments justify the extra money you’re paying.
Jackets:
Carhartt jackets (Detroit specifically): Trusted by blue collar workers and fashionable young adults alike, Carhartt jackets combine good looks with top of the line materials. Lined with 3M insulation, Carhartt provides long lasting materials that you can trust to keep you warm.
Puffer jackets: Puffer jackets allow those who want a light-weight top to still stay warm. Popular brands like The North Face and Patigonia dominate these markets, with their single and dual tone down puffers, providing warmth and style to any outfit.
Polo jackets: For nicer nights out, a Polo jacket perfectly finishes off an outfit. Although these jackets aren’t the best to keep you warm, your outfit will look chic.
Shoes:
Timberland Boots: A staple in winter fashion, the classic tan timberland boot, provides structure and support to keep your feet warm and dry during the snowy winter months. The Gore-Tex technology allows the leather to remain dry and their steel-toed options are a must for any worksite.
Reebok Club Cs: A classic sneaker, the Reebok Club C remains a leather low top that can match any outfit in their tan and white color ways.
Tops:
Waffle knit long sleeves: Waffle knit shirts are good for layering or can be worn on their own. These cozy knits are good to help you stay warm and are a perfect choice for versatility and comfort.
Raw edge/cropped: Despite belly button crop tops not making it off the runway for male fashion (yet), a raw edge or “cropped” top is an easy way to elevate a plain outfit. This style was popular in the early 2000s and is making a comeback throughout all seasons.
Tips:
Layering: Winter is the best time of year to experiment with layering as it will keep you warm. Adding a white t-shirt peeking out from under a crewneck sweater or layering flannels and jackets creates a stylish and cozy look.
Finding basics: Find basics you like, and stock up on them. As you get older and stop growing, it’s important to invest in good basics that fit you well. If you find a basic pair of jeans that fit you well, debate purchasing a couple more pairs as they will last you a lifetime. Having a plethora of different color t-shirts also provides you a multitude of outfit options that are perfect for any occasion.
Shop environmentally: Fast fashion is out and shopping environmentally is in. Whether it be thrifting or shopping second hand online on sites like Depop or ThredUp, you’re able to find more unique pieces while shopping ethically.
