The 2025 Met Gala on May 5 saw a wide array of celebrities showcasing their fashion-forward looks for the evening. This year’s theme, titled “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” explored Black style and the rich history of dandyism. The overall goal was to celebrate the role of clothing and personal style in shaping and expressing Black identities. Here are our thoughts on seven standout looks from this year’s iconic event.
Lupita Nyong’o:
Lupita Nyong’os look immediately caught our eyes as soon as the Met Gala began. Unlike the sea of black and white, her baby blue suit brought a refreshing pop of color to the blue carpet. The outfit struck a perfect balance between elegance and individuality, making it become one of the most memorable of the night. Our favorite detail was the sheer mesh cape that gracefully draped over her suit. To complete Nyong’o’s look, her accessories — from her chic hat to sparkling jewelry — seamlessly tied the whole look together.
Lorde
When we first saw Lorde’s appearance at the Met Gala, we were, to say the least, disappointed. The design and color of her outfit wasn’t appealing, and we found both to be underwhelming. Her small top barely covered her front and left her back completely exposed, which felt more revealing than stylish. While open-back tops are currently a trend, Lorde’s version didn’t come across as fashionable or elegant, just overly bare. She was also seen holding a matching blazer, but never wore it during her walk on the blue carpet. In our opinion, actually wearing the blazer could have elevated the look and helped it align more closely with the event’s theme.
Emma Chamberlain
Emma Chamberlain stood out as our favorite look of the entire event. Her long black dress, accented with white lining, was striking for its distinctive design. We especially loved how the row of buttons across her waist cleverly mimicked the structure of a suit or pant suit. The addition of black mesh tights and gloves added a stylish, edgy touch. Chamberlain completed the look with a sleek pixie haircut and chic glasses, perfectly tying the whole look together with effortless sophistication.
Gigi Hadid
Gigi Hadid’s dazzling gold dress stood out to us immediately. Decked out in sparking gold details, the halter neck dress draped Hadid perfectly. Hadid’s hair was a beautiful half up, half down with loose curls and a twisted style on the top of her head. We absolutely loved her silver and black fan shaped earrings. They held a single yellow gem in the middle that matched her dress flawlessly.
Sofia Richie
Sofia Richie’s take on the theme was definitely one of our favorites. While other celebrities wore sleek suits to the Met Gala this year, Richie wore a simple, yet stunning gown. Her dress was pearl white with a high neck and an open back. We loved the huge bow in the back which we thought elevated the simple gown. Richie kept the focus on the dress with her signature slick back bun. Diamonds were her choice of jewelry, adding class onto her gorgeous look.
We can’t be the only ones whose jaws dropped when we saw Diana Ross step out onto the blue carpet. Ross was decked out in a stunning bedazzled gown with an extremely long feathered coat. Silver jewels ran down to the very end of her train, making her shine like a goddess. She sported a feather hat which perfectly matched her long train. Keeping the diamond theme in place, Ross wore eye-catching silver earrings that touched her shoulders.
When we saw Amelia Gray Hamlin step out onto the carpet, we weren’t sure where to look first. The extravagant lace outfit was just too messy. She wore a red head to toe lace bodysuit with a matching red lace head scarf and train. She was one of many wearing a blazer, but the coat was a huge pop of red which felt overwhelming , considering the fact that her outfit was also bright red. Hamlin also wore nude lace shorts under her body suit which made the outfit look extremely out of place and unorganized. Overall, Hamilin’s outfit looked unsophisticated and inappropriate for the Met Gala.
Out of all the mens looks, Lewis Hamilton’s was our favorite. Hamilton was dressed in a dignified all-white tuxedo. The train of his coat had pearl pendants at the end which we thought added flare to the outfit. Hamilton was also wearing a stylish gold brooch beret to match his suit which had a similar brooch on it. We thought that Hamilton found the perfect mix between simple and elegant, while also being on theme.
We loved Questlove’s look at the Met Gala. He kept it simple by wearing a full black and white striped suit. We loved that his suit was striped, as many celebrities were just wearing monochromatic outfits. Qestlove wore black shoes and a white colored shirt tying his look together perfectly. He also wore his classic huge frame glasses, as well as silver rings on his fingers.
