On Wednesday, Sep. 3, the girls varsity soccer team faced Nipmuc Regional High School in their first home game of the season. The final score was 4-0.
Despite Nipmuc’s strong defense in the first half of the game, the team started off strong and communicated, being ready for anything that came their way. Wayland kept a high pressure on their opponents by taking shots on the goal. The same went for the Nipmuc team, but junior goalie Shubha Iyer made many saves for Wayland. At halftime, the score was tied 0-0.
During the halftime talk, head coach Edmund DeHoratius, talked to the girls about how well they were playing during the game. He also highlighted how frustrated Nipmuc was getting. He encouraged the team to keep playing the same way into the second half.
The second half really set the tone for the game. Around ten minutes into the second half, Nipmuc scored their first goal. As the game progressed, Nipmuc scored their second and third goal, and Wayland just couldn’t recover. Finally, during the final eight minutes, Nipmuc scored their last and final goal, making it their fourth goal of the game.
After the fourth goal, DeHoratius called a timeout. He told the players to keep playing their game and to be strong.
The game ended with the final score of 4-0 with Nipmuc taking the win. The team’s next game is away at Grafton on Friday, Sept. 5.
