On Thursday, Sept. 11, the girls varsity field hockey team faced Newton South in their second home game of the season. The game ended in a tie 1-1.
First quarter:
In the first quarter no goals were scored, due to strong defense from both teams. Throughout the quarter, Wayland had some shots on goal, but Newton South’s goalie was successful in preventing Wayland from scoring.
The quarter ended 0-0.
Second quarter:
Newton South was able to break through Wayland’s defense in the second quarter, as a Newton South player scored a goal against sophomore goalie Elizabeth Gurber.

Third quarter:
Early in the third quarter, senior captain Zoe Garcia received a two minute green card, which was caused by a minor transgression. Wayland got on the scoreboard with a goal from sophomore Mackenzie Grogan.
“This game we moved the ball across the field really well,” junior captain Aine Chase said. “[Our] defense, midfielders and forwards connected together to make switches and passes.”
The quarter ended 1-1.
Fourth quarter:
Throughout the fourth quarter both teams kept going back and forth, running up and down the field. There were several penalty shots, but no goals were made by either team.
