Wayland High School will hold its third annual Spirit Day on Wednesday, with old traditions and new activities for WHS students to enjoy. This year however will be the beginning of a new tradition, Spirit Week.
Spirit Week kicks off with an A Cappella concert on Monday night, featuring the T-tones, Muses, and Madrigals. The concert will take place at 7:30 in the Little Theater, and there is no admission fee.
Tuesday will feature the annual Dodgeball Tournament where student and teacher teams can get a chance to compete for the prize of $300.
Although both Monday and Tuesday are regular school days, Wednesday, a half day, is Spirit Day.
During Spirit Day, all four grades are pitted against each other in a competition for the Spirit Day Cup. Each homeroom competes against others in a variety of activities. This year, activities will include Capture the Flag, Coke & Pepsi, Teacher Trivia, and a new activity called “Minute to Win it”.
Like the TV show, “Minute to Win it” will challenge homerooms to complete one minute activities to win the event. Students will slide Oreos from their foreheads to their mouths and shoot rubber bands at soda cans as part of the festivities.
“We have some pretty funny challenges, so I’m excited for all the homerooms to get really competitive and show their school and grade spirit,” said Student Council President Lina Cowen.
Students are encouraged to wear a specific color of clothing per class for a grade-wide psych. Freshmen wear green, sophomores wear blue, juniors wear red, and seniors wear orange and black. Last year, students were decked out in their respective colors, bearing face paint, headbands, and flags.
A pep rally will follow the activities, at which the winner of the Spirit Day Cup will be announced and the cheerleading team and pep band will perform.
After Spirit Day, Wayland’s senior girls will face off against Weston’s in a powderpuff game at Weston High School at 1 pm. On Thanksgiving morning at 10 am, the Wayland Warriors varsity football team will play the Weston Wildcats at Weston.
“Spirit Day is definitely one of my favorite days of the year, and I’m excited for the fun to be spread out to the entire week,” said Cowen. “I hope that everyone gets really involved next week and shows their true WHS pride.”
