While travelling down Route 126 in Wayland’s town center, most drivers see the relatively standard traffic light and the handful of small shops and offices that line the streets. However, last October, drivers started to see large dummies outside the first building on the north side of the traffic light. Seven foot tall wooden and newspaper-stuffed figures have been entertaining drivers ever since.

Matthew Cooper, a chiropractor whose practice is located in Wayland’s town center, has added a buzz to the air by putting up seasonal displays outside his office.

“What started out as something fun for the staff, quickly turned into a fun visual for the town,” said Cooper.

Cooper’s office is located around 100 feet north of the intersection of Rt. 20 and Rt. 126/27, and along with it, a creative display.

Cooper has done three displays based on Halloween, Christmas, and most recently The Super Bowl.

“We did the Halloween scene, and I figured it was what it was, but people actually really liked them,” explained Cooper.  “The reaction has been patients talking about it, to mothers in my wife’s mother’s group commenting, to even getting letters from different people saying how much they like it.”

Creatively corresponding to his profession, Cooper makes all of the displays deal with some sort of back injury.  Along with an aching Santa, Cooper’s other two displays also dealt closely with back injuries.

“The Halloween guy had his hand on the patient which is what we do in chiropractic, and the football guy looks like he’s being hit, so he’s definitely going to need a chiropractor,” says Cooper.

Born and raised in Lexington, MA, Cooper took the medical path throughout college, with the eventual goal of being a doctor.  It wasn’t until later when he decided to go into chiropractics.  Now living in Wayland with two young kids, Cooper has a successful two-part practice treating humans as well as numerous animals.

Although Cooper’s business has increased since he put up the displays in late October, he says that the increase in business is only half the fun.

“I get to spend a lot of great time with my son,” said Cooper.  “We’ve been going to The Home Depot together to get all of the stuff to build [the displays] with.”

Cooper has added a new look to the Wayland town center and says that there are more displays to come.

“Oh yeah there will be another one coming soon… it’s going to be a good one!”
