In efforts to raise money for the Jimmy Fund, Wayland High School is participating in a five-week rally against cancer. Led by the sophomore class, the fundraiser began on Monday, March 7th.
Decorated boxes have been placed in the science office, Media Center and Commons. Students are encouraged to donate either in these boxes or online and can opt to do so anonymously. The first 200 people to donate $5 or more will receive bracelets.
The fundraiser also serves as a competition between New England schools. Because the rally is Red Sox-themed, the school which raises the most money for cancer research will receive a visit from Red Sox players Clay Buchholz and Tim Wakefield.
Other prizes also include Red Sox hats and tickets. Thanks to a generous anonymous donation, Wayland High School is already in sixth place.
The idea for the fundraiser was originally proposed by science teacher Deanna Riseman. Because of previous donations she had made to the Jimmy Fund, Riseman was on the organization’s email list. After receiving an email regarding the rally, she proposed the idea to sophomore class president Kruti Vora.
“I was really excited about the idea and was happy that the class of 2013 could have the opportunity to help out for such a great cause,” said Vora.
Vora then proposed the idea to the sophomore class e-board. They agreed that the rally would be a great way to bring the school together as well as benefit charity.
“The biggest challege [of the fundraiser] will mostly be getting people excited,” said sophomore class vice president Larry Guo.
Sophomores initially spread the word of the rally by going homeroom to homeroom, as well as standing by a donation box in the commons during all lunches last Monday. The sophomore e-board also registered themselves on the fundraiser website as a way of showing their support for the cause.
Donations will be accepted until April 8.
