The sixth annual Wayland Cross Country Festival, a community race for children and adults will be held this Sunday. The event’s goal is to promote fitness for all ages and abilities and to act as a fundraiser for the Wayland High School cross country teams. Wayland High School dad Eric Bucher has been the main event organizer since its start.
“Running is my passion. I love all forms of running, but cross country is one of my favorites,” said Bucher. “I created the festival six years ago to provide an event for adults and children to enjoy the sport.”
The event consists of a three kilometer race for athletes 14 and under and multiple five kilometer races for athletes of all ages.
Wayland High School’s cross country teams will provide assistance at the race.
“This gives the athletes an opportunity to give back to their sport,” said Bucher.
Both the three and five kilometer courses begin and end at the Wayland High School track and include grassy fields, wooded trails and a few hills.
With the support of many new sponsors, the festival will be presenting awards, such as gift certificates, to the race winners.
“The sixth year for the event looks like it is going to be the best year ever,” said Bucher. “Whether you are a veteran of the trails or have never run a cross-country race, this a race for you.”
