This April, Wayland High School will be celebrating National Poetry Month. National Poetry Month has been celebrated in the United States since 1996. The Academy of American Poets created the poetry month to increase awareness and appreciation of poetry in America.
In the past few years, English teachers have celebrated National Poetry Month by reading and teaching poetry in their English classes. This year, Wayland High School will be trying something new.
“In past years we have created displays. I think each year we try something new, and this year, the library wanted to collaborate with the English department,” said librarian Erin Dalbec.
There will be several events in school throughout April that will promote poetry and will bring students closer to poetry.
On April 4th, there will be a free screening of the movie Louder Than a Bomb. The film has won numerous awards at many different festivals. Students and teachers may attend the screening right after school in the Lecture Hall. The movie is about Chicago-area student poets who compete in competitions, much like the poetry slam poets who performed at WHS in March.
On April 12th, during all of the lunches there will be Poetry and Pizza in the Media Center. Students, teachers and parents will read their favorite piece of poetry. There will be pizza for all who attend. Contact Erin Dalbec or Pam Miller if you would like to participate. You can come whether or not you read poetry.
April 26th will be Poem in your Pocket day. All students will be given a piece of poetry as they enter school and will read it to the person next to them during homeroom. No two people will have the same piece of poetry. This way, everyone gets to hear a new poem that they have never heard before.
Every day during National Poetry Month, poems will be read over the loudspeaker during homeroom.
“For me, poetry month means the opportunity to read new poetry and hear new poetry by students, teachers, parents and staff at the high school,” said Dalbec.
