Five days a week, sophomore Jessica Brofsky can be found doing what she loves most at the Colonial Figure Skating Club in Boxborough: skating.
Brofsky first began skating when she was five at the Sharper Edge Skating Club in Concord. Her older cousins had skated, so she wanted to skate too.
In 6th grade, Brofsky moved to the Natick Skating Club and then the Colonial Figure Skating Club because the coaches at the Colonial Figure Skating Club teach higher level skaters. Brofsky has been skating in Boxborough for three years now.
Every year, Brofsky’s skating club has a show called “Ice Crystals,” in which all the club members take part. The show starts in May and consists of solo and group performances.
“I like learning new jumps, but I don’t like doing my program,” said Brofsky. For her longer performances, Brofsky must skate for over three minutes, which requires lots of stamina.
Brofsky is also part of the Theater on Ice team. Last year, her team placed second in nationals. They also qualified for the Nations Cup, which competes against several other countries such as Spain, Russia and France. Brofsky’s team placed fourth in the Nations Cup.
“I think shows are really exciting, but for competitions I get really nervous because there’s more pressure,” said Brofsky.
This year, if Brofsky’s team comes in the top three at nationals, the team will go to Spain next year for Nations Cup again.
“Theater on Ice is kind of new to the United States, but it’s been around a long time in countries such as France, so the competitions are a lot more difficult there,” said Brofsky.
Brofsky is considering skating in her future. She plans on taking a gap year after senior year and before college to try to skate on “Disney on Ice.” Brofsky hopes to skate in the European or South American tour. Brofsky is also considering skating on a collegiate team.
