What an exciting weekend it has been for Warrior sports. Yes, I know I am supposed to recap an entire week of WHS sports, but I am going to focus mainly on this past weekend and the two soccer charity games.
The weekend started on Friday night with another big win for the football team. The Warriors got off to a fast start and never looked back, beating Boston Latin soundly, 40-6.
On Saturday night, both the boys and girls soccer teams played in charity games. The proceeds from the girls soccer game went to Kids to Kids, while the proceeds from the boys soccer team’s Kicks for Cancer game against Acton-Boxborough went to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Kicks for Cancer was created in memory of Lois Wells, the mother of Concord-Carlisle Assistant Coach Steve Wells. Every player who played Saturday night wore a special shirt with the name of someone they knew who had battled cancer.
This year marked the sixth annual Kicks for Cancer game. Both teams hoped to raise over $20,000 for cancer research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. All past Kicks for Cancer games, including this game, were held at Concord-Carlisle Regional High School, and the teams have raised more than $71,000 over the past five years.
The boys soccer team tied Acton-Boxborough, 0-0. It was a big tie for the Warriors because ESPN ranked AB’s soccer team number three in the state. Pierce Keegan and the defense made a really good team effort, and Matt Edwards made some nice saves as goalie to shut out AB.
The girls’ Kids to Kids game was even more exciting. With the score at 0-0 with only a few seconds remaining, junior Michaela Moynihan scored the game-winning goal. The girls defeated Lynnfield, 1-0.
Kids to Kids was created in 2005 by Wayland sisters Julia and Amelia Haney as well as sisters Emily and Sarah Nuss. Kids to Kids helps support children living in poor communities in the Caribbean and Central America. Kids to Kids is now a global organization that partners with the Peace Corps and supports over 300 projects across eight countries.
In professional sports, the Patriots had a huge win on Sunday. They looked awful in the first half, but then they scored 45 second-half points, winning 52-28. A question for my readers: Should I pick up Brandon Bolden in my fantasy league?
Sunday also marked the one year anniversary of Terry Francona being fired as the manager of the Red Sox. Francona was the most successful manager in team history. It is kind of ironic that, on the day he was fired, Red Sox fans thought it could not possibly get any worse.
Well, it has gotten worse, a lot worse.
Nobody saw this coming: 90 losses. It hasn’t been this bad since Carl Everett was on the team in 2001 (see below). I predict that current manager Bobby Valentine will be fired by the time I sit down to write this blog next week. Here’s hoping that in one year we can look back at success and not failure. I mean, it can’t get any worse, right?
“God created the sun, the stars, the heavens and the earth and then made Adam and Eve. The Bible never says anything about dinosaurs. You can’t say there were dinosaurs when you never saw them. Someone actually saw Adam and Eve. No one ever saw a Tyrannosaurus Rex.” -Carl Everett
