Gabriner, a senior editorial producer for ABC News, covers special events such as the Presidential Inauguration and breaking news stories like the Newtown shooting. On Wednesday, Gabriner came to WHS to talk to students about broadcast journalism.

Instead of directly delivering the news on television, Gabriner works behind the scenes to prepare the anchor and pull together the facts of a story for a broadcast.

“The producer worries about gathering the visual elements and the graphic elements, doing some reporting and gathering some facts,” Gabriner said.

Although Gabriner has a leading role at ABC News, she started off her career with an entry level job. Gabriner noted that entry level jobs and internships are important ways to help launch your career.

“My advice in terms of journalism or any career is that when you’re given a small opportunity, a foot in the door, you really have to make the most of it,” Gabriner said.

Gabriner advised aspiring journalists to approach entry level jobs and internships with the right attitude.

“Start by doing every menial task they ask you, with a smile, and they will love you,” Gabriner said. “The intern who looks bored or who is just waiting for their big opportunity, they’re wasting their time.”

Although it took a lot of time and effort to get to where she is now, Gabriner finds her career rewarding and enjoys journalism.

“I’m a news junkie, and I’ve been fortunate enough to see parts of the world. I’ve had the opportunity to meet world leaders like Nelson Mandela, an incredible opportunity that I’m very grateful for,” Gabriner said. “I like the information, and I like research. That’s the part of the story I like.”
