For most athletes, it is common to start as a beginner and work your way up to the top. However, freshman Sarah Tully has started off her high school career as one of the best cross country runners in the DCL.
This season Tully won several DCL meets against other teams, won a freshman invitational and recently came in third in the DCL championship. She will also be attending Sectionals in two weeks, which consists of the top seven runners on each team.
“We’re all very excited to have Sarah on the team,” senior cross country captain Elizabeth Karpacz said. “From the moment we saw her, we knew she was going to be very fast. She is the fastest girl Wayland cross country has seen in a very long time.”
Tully’s passion for running did not start in high school, though. Both of her parents are runners, so she picked up the sport from them and has been racing ever since she was little.
“I have always been running,” Tully said, “I kept going and it just developed.”
Since Tully runs at a faster pace than most other kids her age, she ends up competing against many junior and senior athletes.
“It’s kind of intimidating, but it’s a lot of fun because it’s a new experience,” Tully said.
Tully plans on continuing to run throughout high school and hopes to even improve upon her success.
“I would want to win at some point the DCL championship and maybe win Sectionals,” Tully said. “I want to do as well as I can at States.”
