Over the past few days with the temperatures well below freezing, Wayland High students have had second thoughts about their New England open campus. With temperatures in the low twenties, walking outside just to get to class has been difficult. As part of the planning for a “new school,” students have been asked if they would like to reconsider an open campus.
Two weeks ago, the Futures Team, an assembly of teachers, parents, community members, current students and even some graduates, met at the town building to discuss how Wayland High should look in the future. Topics such as modifying the building, the style of teaching and what helps students learn were all discussed. Because the Wayland High buildings have not changed a great deal from the 1960’s, people are looking for new ways to better the school. The outdated science labs, the remoteness of the main office from classroom spaces, and the lack of locks on bathroom doors are a few of the many problems concerning staff and students.
Despite the recent cold weather and snow, however, the idea of a possible “closed building” did not make it onto students’ “Top 15 Wish List.” The top fifteen requested changes to Wayland High School, as suggested by over 50 current students were:
1. Tasty/cheaper Lunches
2. Locks on the bathroom doors
3. Locks on the lockers (in field house locker room)
4. Mirrors
5. Cleaner commons
6. Color (on the wall, pictures)
7. Flowers/plants
8. Picnic tables (area to eat outside)
9. New language lab
10. New weight room
11. Better commons seating
12. More area backstage in the Little Theatre
13. Vending machines
14. Air Conditioning
15. New water fountains

i think the whole school should be cleaner, not just the commons. Most of my classrooms are gross….

hm…definitely agree with the improvement of the bathrooms. also, the practice rooms in the arts buildings seem to have very interesting growths on the walls >.<. I actually love the outdoor campus! Luckily, if everything becomes inside, I’ll probably be gone by then.

I think that the cleaner commons would benefit everyone, and a less cramped one at that (emphasizing what boxxy said) and why do we need air conditioning?? At least think about that LATER and not now, we have a lot of problems with just basic heating in some of my classrooms.

I don’t think we need cleaner commons; I believe whatever grows under the tables to be perfectly harmless….

the language lab isn’t ridiculous. i think it can be useful at times. healthier lunches would be nice, and cheaper too. more seating in the commons, locks on bathroom doors, etc.

To my knowledge, it wasn’t the ones on the futures team.

what students made this list? was it the ones on the future team or other people?

The language lab is ridiculous. A little pointless, too, it seems. My class isn’t productive at all in that room.
I don’t really think it’s a matter of *better* commons seating, as in the type of seats or whatever, it’s just a matter of we need more seating than we have now.

What a lame new school this’ll be

the ‘cleaner commons’ would be a WELCOME change. maybe a less cramped commons too?
also maybe some silent study computers? the lab and academic center are usually really busy/noisy. it’d be nice to just have a silent workstation area to go focus on a paper or something.
