There are many popular indoor hobbies and interests that are easy to do year-round; however, for sophomore Seth Curtin, it was the outdoor sport of fishing that caught his interest despite the changing weather.

“I try and go year-round, but in the late summer, like July, and in the early winter, like November, it’s near impossible to go fishing just because the conditions aren’t right,” Curtin said.

During the school year, Curtin goes mostly on the weekends and occasionally on Wednesdays. When he does go, he tries to catch bass, pickerel and perch, and he avoids certain types of fish, like sunfish. The size of the fish he catches vary, but the biggest fish he’s caught yet was one over this past summer in Cape Cod.

“I caught this absolutely gigantic bass. It was huge, like a good six pounds, maybe more,” Curtin said. “It was very big. Six pounds may not sound quite as big as it is, but a fish is essentially like a hollow tube. So, it has a lot of volume more than the weight.”

Although Curtin has been fishing for most of his life, he only got actively into it a few years ago.

“I think it was my dad who first took me fishing,” Curtin said. “But he isn’t the biggest fisherman, so I didn’t really go all too much until I could bike further than a mile or so away from my house.”

One of his favorite experiences fishing was when he caught eight fish, all adult bass, within a few hours.

“I caught around eight bass, and it was within a couple of hours, and it was a really good day for that. They were all prize fish too, so no babies when I caught them,” Curtin said.

Curtin not only enjoys fishing because of the feeling of accomplishment it gives him when he catches the fish, but he also enjoys being outside.

“I like getting the fish, I like the outdoors, I like the water,” Curtin said. “I just like everything about fishing.”
