Tiësto, David Guetta, Avicii and sophomore Camron Shahidi. What do they all have in common? They all share a passion for DJing.
Shahidi became interested in DJing about three years ago.
“I’ve played piano and drums all my life, and I thought DJing was really interesting and something I might like,” Shahidi said. “I started learning how to mix music about a year later, and now I can produce music.”
It was his love for loud, electronic music that got him interested in DJing from the beginning.
“The main reason I DJ is because I really, really enjoy it, and I have a huge passion for music,” Shahidi said.
Shahidi explains that the hardest part of DJing, in terms of music production, is the gradual process of mixing the music and producing it.
“There’s a lot of careful details you need to pay attention to, and it takes a long time, so you have to be patient throughout the process. You need to make sure you get the best quality work without rushing it,” Shahidi said.
According to Shahidi, last summer he worked with a DJ he met through a mutual friend, who is also a DJ and producer. That was when he realized that DJing wasn’t just a hobby; it was something that he was seriously passionate about and might want to pursue as a career.
“We were in the process of making a song, and I was the one who was coming up with all of the ideas, so I thought, ‘Wow. Maybe I could really do this,'” Shahidi said. “Then I started my own demo, and I started making a lot of songs. I’ve been working on them, and I have a few that are ready to go.”
Shahidi has a step-by-step process he follows when making and producing a track.
“First I’ll start with the piano, and I’ll play around with different combos. If I like something, I’ll play it again while recording it on my phone,” Shahidi said. “Then, I’ll put the notes into a program on my computer and then play around with it for a little bit. Eventually, I’ll turn it into a song.”
Shahidi hopes for success in the future. He shares that he hasn’t done much on social media to advertise his music, but he does have a Soundcloud and an Instagram.
“I’m working a lot on my songs and trying to get them to the best they can be,” Shahidi said. “I’m trying to get settled with a manager and a record company before I start making a name.”
Shahidi advises people who might want to venture into the DJing world to listen to a lot of electronic music and to start watching videos on Youtube.
“Never give up on your dreams and projects,” Shahidi said.
