Wayland High School’s chapter of the National Art Honors Society is working to make a tree sculpture for the Wayland Public Library.

“We’re mostly collecting books now,” NAHS member Elisa Zhang said.

Books will comprise the base of the sculpture. The group is currently collecting used books from Savers, the Wayland Public Library’s “50 cents section” and the town dump.

“We’re planning to have the trunk made out of books on the ground,” NAHS member junior Sheryl Chin said. “And then maybe a mobile with fishing line and actual branches from the outside. We were planning to take some of the paper out of the books and cut them into leaf shapes.”

The club has already stacked the books for the trunk, and they may later paint the sculpture with a thin layer of white paint to make it monotone.

“We had a lot of weird ideas, and it was hard to think this up,” Chin said.

Wayland’s NAHS chapter is led by President Ariella Fuzaylov and adult advisors Amy Cuneo and Janet Armentano. The group is community service-based and focuses on sharing art with the community. The club’s members hope to finish the sculpture before the end of this school year or sooner.

“When we’re finished and it’s in the public library, everyone should come see it!” said Zhang.
