President:

Emmie O’Shaughnessy
What are some goals you have for this year?
“This year I want to be able to fundraise enough money to support our semi and prom but at the same time make sure our grade has fun while doing it. So instead of just fundraising for semi and prom, I want to put some of that profit towards our grade’s activities. If we reach a certain goal, I want to treat our class to a trip. It could be an amusement park or something along those lines if we still have enough money to support semi and prom. One way that I’m going to fundraise is through selling Wayland apparel. Also, Krispy Kremes have worked pretty well in the past, so I’m going to do those too. I want to keep it open to my grade, so if they have any ideas, I’m very willing to use those. [I] also want to [make] fundraising enjoyable for my classmates. So, if others have ideas of either doing car washes, or a spikeball tournament that they’ve done in the past, [I’d want to do] something like that.”

What makes you different than the other candidates?
“Well I think my intentions are obviously to make enough money for semi and prom, but also at the same time I want people to enjoy the process of it and not just be focused all on getting enough money, and have fun at the same time.”

Jay Provost
Why are you running?
“I have spirit and pride in our grade, and I really want this year to be the best it can be.”

What makes you different from the other candidates?
“I want to listen to our class ideas and the kids in our grade, [I want to have] fun fundraisers and maybe do some cool class activities.”

Joe Tardif
What are some goals you have for this year?
“My goals are to make this school a lot more better and a lot more fun than it already is because there’s a lot of school work going on but not a lot of fun.”

What makes you different than the other candidates?
“I’m a lot better than them because I want to have fun, but I [also] think we can get some stuff done too while we’re having fun. I can be serious if I want to, and the school is a really nice school, but I think a lot of people want to see some changes.”

Samuel Goldstone
What are some goals you have for this year?
“Some goals I have for this year for myself and my whole grade [are that] I want to raise a lot of money so we can make our semi tickets a lot cheaper and so we can also fundraise and hopefully have a few class events for our whole grade. [This] will turn out to maybe be a trip, [which] would be something really cool like Canobie Lake or Six Flags. [I’m also thinking about holding] a dance at the end of the year, but it really depends on how much money we raise and how many events we have to raise money.”

What makes you different than the other candidates?
“I believe I’m different from the other candidates because I’m more ambitious and I have a lot of drive. This is something I’ve wanted for a long time now. I really want to run this class. I think that I’m a leader. I’ve been told by people that I have strengths and weaknesses, and I really want to focus on my weaknesses so I can focus on being a better person and really get our grade up to the standard that we can be. I know that we can be an amazing group of kids, and I really think that we can drive together and work together to become the best we all can be together.”

Walker Whitehouse
What are some goals you have for this year?
“As president, I hope to figure out a way to keep the doors on the side of the school unlocked during school hours; I have been late several times. I hope to make an online suggestion box and incorporate the computers they give us and that sort of thing.”

What makes you different than the other candidates?
“I’m the best candidate because I have lots of experience leading people from my career as a Boy Scout. I’m almost an Eagle Scout, and I have done a lot of community service. I have seen and heard of kids giving out candy and other sweets for people’s vote, [and] I don’t think their cheap candy is [worth] a vote.”

Vice President:

Atharva Weling
What are some goals you have for this year?
“Some goals I have are to organize a sports night fundraiser for our upcoming dances, to create programs to help freshmen deal with the stress that many of them now face, and to fundraise enough money to send our freshmen class on at least one big class trip.”

What makes you different than the other candidates?
“I think that I’m different from the other candidates because I’ve organized school wide events before, and I have a lot of experience with leadership.”

Aydan McGah
Why are you running?
“I want to get more involved and help out with things in the school.”

What are some goals you have?
“I want to focus on getting ready for semi and prom. I don’t think we’d have enough time to raise money for something freshman year [while] also starting to plan ahead, so if we raise a ton of money now, we can make them really good next year and the year after that.”

Dylan Bonnano
Why are you running?
“I thought it would be a good experience to get the skills like leadership, writing a speech, being in charge, [and] helping the actual president.”

What makes you different than the other candidates?
“I’m dedicated, so if I get [to be] vice president, I’m going to stick with it and try my best to help the president [as well as] put my ideas [into action].”

Eric Zhang
Why are you running?
“I decided to run because I think that I could really spend some time outside the house. I also decided to run because I think the experience will help me become a better person and improve my leadership.”

Why are you different from the other candidates?
“Truthfully, I don’t think I’m much better than my opposition. Despite that, I think an advantage I have is having good management skills and also good note taking skills.”

Erin Hines
Why are you running?
“I decided to run for [an officer] position on the freshman [executive board] after wanting to be a part of student government for a while. I feel that being able to plan events and deal with problems for the class is really important and a great way to be a part of the school. When participating in sports and clubs, we only really meet people with similar interests. I want to be available to anyone who needs a friend, study buddy, etc., and being a part of the student government can help get connect with classmates that I probably wouldn’t otherwise. I also want to be able to help leave an amazing legacy for the Class of 2021.”

What makes you different from the other candidates?
“I think something that I have against my seven other competitors for Vice President is that I am involved in both the athletics and the fine arts at WHS. This gives me a point of view from two very different sides of being a student at Wayland High School. This helps when it comes to issues that arise and need to be looked at from different points of view before making a decision based on my beliefs alone. Another reason [why] I have an edge on the competition is that I’m always open to new ideas and people. If life is an obstacle course and someone has an idea on how to make it easier for you, would you think about trying it? My look on life is to always smile and never look back. If I can help some of my fellow students by making them smile or helping them through a hard time, it would make my day and hopefully theirs too. Planning events school wide and just within our class also drew me to run for office. My approach to this campaign is to keep it upbeat, have fun and fight for the future.”

Sashwat Das
Why are you running?
“Mostly, it’s good for college, but also because it would be fun.”

What makes you different from the other candidates?
“I’m not running ‘just because’, I’m running to help with stuff, do things around the school. Usually, every day is the same thing [at school], but I’m going to make it different.

Remmi Shaw
What are some goals you have for this year?
“Just to create a better environment for the freshman, and to get everyone more involved in everything.”

What makes you different than the other candidates?
“The fact that I can go to any friend group, and have somebody to talk to and kind of merge people together.

Victoria Andreasen
Why are you running?
“I chose to run for VP because I’m really interested in being part of student government. I would really enjoy being an advocate and representative for my fellow classmates.”

Why are you different from the other candidates?
“I am a better candidate than my opponents because I am a natural leader, outspoken and enjoy talking to everyone and working in a group to solve problems.”

Secretary:

Keenan Schlip
What are some goals you have for this year?
“I [want to] be able to make sure that everyone gets to do good things in the office and that it’s not being taken advantage of. [I want it to be] something that’s important.”

What makes you different than the other candidates?
“I will make sure that everyone stays on track and that we will have good fundraising.”

Meredith Prince
What are some goals you have for this year?
“Some goals I have are to have a lot of successful fundraisers so we can make enough money for clothes for our grade, semi, and in the future, prom.”

What makes you different than the other candidates?
“I’m really organized, and I always take notes, which will help organize fundraisers. I’m really good at communicating with people, which will help us with our fundraisers.”

Zachary Marto
Why are you running?
“My goal for this year is to serve the grade and make this year whatever the freshmen want it to be. If I am elected, I will send out a survey to every freshman to find out what they want from their student officers. This survey will contain questions on preferred types of community service, any freshmen events people may be interested in and any complaints about the school we may be able to fix.”

What makes you different than the other candidates?
“I am different than my competitors for class secretary because I can undoubtedly state that I am more experienced and prepared than any other candidate. I am a Boy Scout, and I’m part of my troop’s senior patrol. This is a group of three boys who plan everything for the troop; weekly meetings, monthly overnight trips often out-of-state, community service projects and fundraisers like our Christmas tree sales.”

Treasurer:

Aiden Zhang
Why are you running?
“I want to show this class [I’m] the most capable treasurer they can [have].”

What goals do you have?
“I plan to create a more effective way of raising funds so we can do some great things.”

Caterina Tomassini
Why are you running?
“The goals I have for this year are to really learn a lot about budgeting money and also to make this year really great.”

What goals do you have?
“What makes me different from the other candidates is that I don’t want to do this to win, but I want to do this because I’m really interested in learning about being the treasurer and working hard to make our class better.”

Michael Long
Why are you running?
“It would be an interesting [job] to handle the money. I think I’d make some good decisions for the grade.”

What makes you different than the other candidates?
“I think I would make the better decisions for our grade, and [I would] just be [easier to trust] with the money.”

Randy Wang
What are some goals you have for this year?
“Some goals I have for this year if I were elected would be to increase fundraising so we would have more money. For example, we could try and get more people to buy Wayland merchandise which would not only benefit our grade, but also all the other grades. Another big goal of mine would be to work in tandem with our class president on setting up the fundraisers or managing other things like that.”

What makes you different than the other candidates?
“What I feel like makes me different than the other candidates is that I have a set plan on what I’m going to do if I were to be elected, a lot of other candidates don’t have a plan or an idea of what they will do once they are in office.”

Will Obar
Why are you running?
“Because I would want to be a part of the class government, and I feel I would be a good option to run for treasurer.”

What makes you different than the other candidates?
“I like all my competitors, but I feel that I’m better [than some of them] at math and statistics. I have more experience in things like that.”

The freshmen will take in speeches by their presidential and vice presidential candidates during the class meeting this Thursday, Oct. 5. They will vote on Thursday, Oct. 5 and Friday, Oct. 6.
