Warrior Weekly: A College Football Season Update
October 3, 2019
Week five in the world of college football has come to an end, and to be completely honest, I’m not impressed. The week six Associated Press (AP) poll was released on Sunday, Sept. 29, and the top ten teams are as follows:
- Alabama
- Clemson
- Georgia
- Ohio State
- LSU
- Oklahoma
- Auburn
- Wisconsin
- Notre Dame
- Florida
The reason that I am not overly impressed by this is because anyone could have predicted numbers one through five. Meanwhile, six through ten have a little bit of drama to them because of Wisconsin’s 35-14 blowout win against Michigan last week. This was unfortunate for Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh and his Wolverine’s because I honestly think that this year’s Michigan team had a lot of potential. I will never count out a Harbaugh football team for as long as he’s coaching. However, after the Wolverines just barely sneaked a win in double overtime against an unranked Army team, followed by a terrible loss to Wisconsin, things are not looking good for this year for Michigan. According to the ESPN Football Power Index (FPI), Michigan has a 0.2% chance at winning it all this year. I honestly think that in order for Michigan to make it to the College Football Playoffs, they would need to win out, including winning the Big Ten. That is a tough task, given that the Buckeyes are standing in their way.
This weekend, Clemson beat the University of North Carolina (UNC) by one point. One point. I understand that this caused Clemson to drop from number one in the country to number two, but I honestly think that they should have been dropped to number three while Ohio State moves to number two. In my opinion, the top five should be Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson, Georgia, Louisiana State University(LSU). Clemson has no place beating a terrible football team like UNC by only one point. Despite the victory, Saturday was a scary day in Chapel Hill for Clemson coach Dabo Swinney and his Tigers.
LSU is right on the verge of being a playoff team. They had a really impressive win against Texas early on in the season, which is why they are sitting at number five and not lower. However, in order for a team like LSU to secure a playoff spot, they need to prove themselves as a dominant football team at least once or twice more. Of their eight remaining games, they play four ranked opponents: Florida, Auburn, Alabama, and Texas A&M. I honestly think in order for LSU to make the College Football Playoffs (CFP), they have to beat three of these opponents, as well as win all of their games against unranked opponents. LSU has a 9.9% chance to win out according to ESPN FPI. If this happens, there is no doubt in my mind that this LSU team, which is led by transfer quarterback Joe Burrow, will make the CFP and potentially enter higher than the fourth seed.
An obvious story this season in college football is the heavy presence of transfer quarterbacks all around the country. The four most notable transfer QB’s are Jalen Hurts (Alabama to Oklahoma), Justin Fields (Georgia to Ohio State), Kelly Bryant (Clemson to Missouri) and Joe Burrow (Ohio State to LSU). I shouldn’t forget about the all popular Tate Martell (Ohio State to Miami) from the television show QB1. I think that these players have every right to go to the school that gives them the best chance to be successful. These transfer quarterbacks just so happen to be running the tables of the Heisman race. According to ESPN, Jalen Hurts is leading the race, with Justin Fields in fifth, and Joe Burrow in seventh. These three quarterbacks have been dominant all season, and we are only five weeks in.
As predictable as this season has been, it is beginning to get suspenseful and exciting. With teams finally being competitive enough to challenge the powerhouses of Alabama and Clemson, the rest of the season is shaping up to be quite the turnaround of what has been a very placid first half of the year.
