In past years, the coaches vs cancer game has honored not only Jim Griffin, but recent Wayland residents who has lost a family member from cancer. A couple of years ago, the game recognized the Schwartz family for their loss of father and husband Eric Schwartz.

On Friday, Feb. 14th, the girls varsity basketball team will host its annual “Coaches vs Cancer” game in honor of Jim Griffin, a WHS guidance counselor and girls basketball coach who passed away from pancreatic cancer eight years ago.

This year’s coaches for cancer game will take place in the field house against Weston at 5:30 PM, followed by the boys’ game at 7:00 PM. As part of the event, the team will raise money for the American Cancer Society both by selling tickets at the game and selling t-shirts for $15.

Anyone interested in buying a shirt should reach out to players in the girls basketball program or Coach Amanda Rukstalis. All money made during the night with shirts, tickets and snack sales will be donated to the cause.

Last year, the team raised $4,411, but this year, they are looking to surpass this amount with a goal to raise $5,000.

The team ensured there are many ways to help the cause before the event takes place. Along with the shirts, the team has created a donation page where all the proceeds go to the American Cancer Society as well. You can find the page here.

This event holds a special place in the hearts of the Wayland Basketball program, and the team is excited to support the cause for yet another year. The team encourages everyone to come support Wayland basketball and help them raise money to crush cancer.
