Sports Brief: Field hockey and girls soccer seasons in jeopardy

With COVID cases rising in Massachusetts, the Wayland field hockey and girls soccer teams have had to face some upsetting challenges towards the end of their fall seasons.
Most WHS fall sports teams were lucky enough to be able to play during this crazy time. That being said, COVID-19 cases have been rising in Massachusetts, leading to some challenges ahead for the girls varsity soccer and field hockey teams.
After the girls varsity soccer team won against Cambridge Rindge and Latin two nights ago in the first round of playoffs, they were expected to move on to the next round and play Waltham. Due to Waltham being in a hotspot of COVID cases, Wayland was unable to play them in the regular season. With the number of cases still high in Waltham, the Wayland board of health has declined the girls soccer team to play Waltham in the next round. However, the varsity team was able to schedule a “friendly” consolation game against the Weston Wildcats this Saturday at 2 p.m. The game will be a last hurrah for the seniors on the soccer team.
The last time the Wayland field hockey team played together was Wednesday, Oct. 28. Due to a confirmed positive case from the team this past Thursday, the whole team was required to quarantine for two weeks. The team was unable to finish their season or participate in the playoffs this week like other fall teams were able to do.
