The first Monday of May marks what many consider to be the most exclusive night in fashion: the Met Gala. The Met, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is well known for celebrities displaying their weirdly unique or drop-dead gorgeous fashion looks on the red carpet. After the paparazzi take photos, there is an exclusive after-party and a fashion exhibition. The 2022 Met Gala took place on May 2 this year, just months after the long-awaited 2021 Met back in September. Every year there’s a new theme, and for 2022’s Met, it was Gilded Glamour. This theme was a chance for celebrities to give us a modern take on 19th-century ball gowns.

Blake Lively:

Blake Lively, an American actress who has starred in many noteworthy films, looked absolutely stunning at the Met this year as she opened the carpet with a bang. As one of the co-chairmen at the Met this year, Lively brought her A-Game, as she always does. Lively is considered the Queen of the Met Gala and is famous for matching her attire with the colors of the carpet year after year. This year, the Statue of Liberty, which came to the US during the Gilded Age, inspired her dress. The bronze-rusted color dress started tied up and later revealed beautiful green and gold layers of fabric, matching the shades of blue in the carpet. Her gloves, big jewels and crown finished off her majestic look.

Olivia Rodrigo:

Olivia Rodrigo’s stunning dress nailed the glamour part of the Met theme. The silhouette was modern, but there was a touch of that gilded age look with her sheer, above the elbow-length gloves. Rodrigo kept her hair simple, laying in long waves on her back. Her makeup was bold, with a purple smokey eye that helped pull her look together. From the purple shoes on her feet to the butterfly clips in her hair, we can tell she was paying homage to her popular album “SOUR.” Though Rodrigo’s look wasn’t the “Bridgerton” moment we were waiting for, it was gorgeous nonetheless.

Emma Chamberlain:

Emma Chamberlain, a popular trendsetter, had a very tame and simple look this year. Chamberlain’s outfit came straight out of the Gilded Age, with a more modern twist. She strutted down the carpet in a long white skirt and a cropped yellow ruffle top with a layered white collar. Though there wasn’t as much glitz and glam in Chamberlain’s outfit as there was in other celebrities’ looks, she made up for it with the tiara she modeled on her new platinum blonde hair. The contrast between Chamberlain’s light hair and dark, smoky makeup was lovely. Her look didn’t have our jaws on the floor, but we definitely admired it.

Emma Stone:

We can’t lie. When we first saw Emma Stone, we thought she showed up at the Met in her nightgown! Stone’s entire look was underwhelming, to say the least. Considering we’ve seen her in stunning dresses on other red carpets, such as the Oscars, we expected the best of the best from her Met outfit. Instead, she wore a dress that reminded many of the 2001 Academy Awards swan dress, which went viral everywhere due to the stuffed animal swan that wrapped around the waist and bottom of a simple white mini dress. We can appreciate the fact that she was wearing her wedding after-party dress, but we wanted something more than a simple white slip dress for the 74th Met Gala.

Billie Eilish:

Billie Eilish seemed to be one of the few guests at the Met this year that actually considered the theme, and we love that. Eilish rocked a corset top with a flower embedded on the chest, along with green floral lace sleeves and a silky skirt. Her accessories consisted of two chokers, one black and one diamond, which gave an edgy spin to her look. It was gorgeous, but still simple enough for her to not look over the top. Her dark hair and light makeup complemented her outfit perfectly. We can really imagine her “in a crown” with this outfit.

Sebastian Stan:

Is this Pepto-Bismol or the beloved Sebastian Stan? His hot pink suit definitely didn’t fit the theme at all, but somehow he pulled it off. Our jaws truly dropped at this outfit because of how unexpected it was. He showed up on the carpet with a pair of matching sunglasses and what seemed to be his usual haircut: longer on the top and shorter on the sides. All in all, we hope to see something that less resembles a tub of medicine in the future.

Genesis Suero:

Our favorite look from the Met this year was Genesis Suero, and wow, wow, WOW! Our jaws hit the floor when this reporter stepped out. That’s right. This beauty is not one of the A-List celebrities that walked the Met’s stairs. No, she is a reporter! She had a stunning ball gown with puff sleeves that fulfilled everyone’s Cinderella-dress dreams. The sparkles and shape of the dress hit the mark on the theme. It wasn’t just the glorious gown that had us in awe. It was Suero too. Her makeup was simple, as was her hair. The full look was elegant, and well, she looked like a true princess walking the steps of a ball.

Kylie Jenner:

Kylie Jenner’s dress was far from gilded glamor, but we still appreciate the meaning behind it. The Off-White wedding dress was a homage to Kylie Jenner’s deceased friend and Off-White’s founder, Virgil Abloh. Walking down the red carpet, many heads turned in shock, but not necessarily because of the beauty of it. The outfit was not ugly, but it could’ve done without the mesh tee shirt and hat. Her makeup and hair weren’t anything special. It was just a regular look you would expect from Kylie Jenner. Overall, the look was pretty boring.

Kendall Jenner:

Kendall Jenner constantly goes all out for the Met Gala, and this year was no different. The giant ball gown with the long train left us speechless, and she also stuck to the theme. Some thought her bleached eyebrows were controversial, but we think they embraced her other features, like her bold eyelashes. Kendall Jenner is doing great, and we love how she stepped out of her comfort zone with this silhouette.

Kim Kardashian:

Kim Kardashian’s look was one of the most controversial of the night. Not because the outfit wasn’t beautiful, but because it was Hollywood star Marilyn Monroe’s iconic “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” dress. Kardashian also had to lose 16 pounds in less than a month in order to fit into the dress! “It was such a challenge. It was like a role. I was determined, I was determined to fit in it,” Kardashian said in an interview on the carpet. She received a lot of backlash when people saw how unhealthy it was for her to lose that much weight in such a short period of time and for potentially triggering people who struggle with their weight. Aside from the drama, the dress was gorgeous and timeless. Her blond hair fit the Monroe look she was going for, but we were left wishing for something more than a slick back bun. It fits glamor but not gilded.

Considering this year’s theme was Gilded Glamour, we expected gowns that looked like they came straight out of the 1870s-1900s, with a bit of a modern twist. The hair and makeup should’ve showcased high fashion and its part at the Met Gala. Unique makeup looks and delicate hairstyles were what many Met fans expected. Though some celebrities veer off the theme each year, debatably, this year had the most off-theme looks that disappointed many at-home viewers. One thing’s for sure, some of the A-list celebrities’ attire had our jaws hitting the floor, while others had us reaching for the off button on our remotes.
