What the Warriors are Wearing: Purple-out
October 21, 2022
Fri-yay, it’s Friday and tonight you will have to make a big decision. Will you travel to Lincoln-Sudbury (LS) and go to the football game at 7 p.m., or will you stay at home and attend the boys soccer senior night game at 6 p.m..? Maybe you will go to some of both concurrent events and be the ultimate Warriors fan! Thankfully, the psych is the same for each game, so no quick changes in the car will be necessary.
The psych for the games is a purple-out, which includes dressing in lavender, grape, violet or any other shade of purple. The color purple is in honor of Lauren Astley, a Wayland graduate of the class of 2011, who was killed by her ex-boyfriend that year.
“Wear purple in memory of Lauren Astley and to raise awareness for dating violence,” said senior Madeline O’Leary in the “Wayland Fan Section” FaceBook group. “See you on the turf at six.”
Starting time will be 6 p.m., under the lights, for boys soccer, where they will be playing the Warriors’ rivals, the Weston Wildcats. The senior night ceremony will take place before the game. Weston’s record this season is 0-7, whereas Waylands is 8-5, making the odds in our favor! At half time, there will be a ceremony celebrating the 10 seniors on the team and their Wayland soccer careers.
“As a junior, senior night makes me realize that the seniors won’t be around forever,” junior Jake Newton said. “It’s important to enjoy the rest of our season with them on the team.”
Additionally, it is one of the last home games for boys soccer, making it one of the last few games the seniors will play on their home turf.
“This game is extra special to everyone on the team as we know it is a game to celebrate our seniors.” Newton said.
On the other hand, football is not on par with the soccer team, record-wise. However, their rival, LS, only has obtained two wins, giving Wayland a chance to get a win themselves. This game will be at LS’s turf, making it an easy 12 minute ride for those who plan to attend soccer prior.
“I think we have a pretty good chance of winning this game,” senior football captain Anthony Cavallo said. “LS isn’t as good this year.”
Both teams, football and soccer, have high hopes of winning their games, making it an eventful night. So, get your purple on, bring the energy and remember why you are going. Let’s go, Warriors, let’s go!
“The fan section helps a lot,” Cavallo said. “I think it brings the energy up and helps the players too.”
