Fashionista of the Month: January

Name: Iyala Khawer
Grade: Junior
Favorite store: “My favorite store is probably Cos, as it has so many basics and different item pieces that either fit very well or are very unique. I also love to shop at thrift stores just to find very unique pieces.”
Online shopping or in-store: “I prefer in-store shopping as I can try them on and feel the quality of the fabric.”
Fashion icon: “My mom always has the best outfits and is very put together. When I was little, she used to pick out my outfits, but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve developed my own style that often takes inspiration from her.”
Design time: “I usually make my outfits at night before I go to bed or in the morning before school. When I make my outfits before bed, they are a lot more put together. In the mornings, I just have a slight clue about what I want to wear and quickly figure it out from there.”
Favorite article of clothing: “My favorite clothing item would probably be my jeans, as they are so versatile, and I can pair them in many different ways. They also fit many occasions.”
Style word: “I think one word to describe my fashion style is eclectic, as I take inspiration from many different places.”
Fashion-challenged advice: “Some advice I would give is to start experimenting with clothing items you don’t usually wear. Even if it is just wearing jeans instead of sweatpants. Once you start to experiment, you start to realize what clothing you like and what clothing style works for you. Don’t be scared to try something new.”
What does fashion mean to you? “Fashion is a creative output for myself. It also causes me a lot of joy. I love being able to experiment with different silhouettes and combinations along with picking jewelry and doing my hair.”
Outfit: “This is an outfit that I recently wore when my family and I went to Milan, [Italy]. The cheetah print shirt is my mom’s. The leather skirt I thrifted. The jacket, hat and shoes were my mom’s and the tights are actually fleece lined tights I got from Amazon, which are perfect for winter. This is one of my simpler outfits, but I still love how each piece comes together.”
