Breaking News: WMS interim principal announced
March 24, 2023
On Friday, March 24, interim Superintendent Parry Graham sent an email to Wayland Middle School families announcing the selection of current Concord Middle School Assistant Principal Tyler Steffey as interim WMS principal for the 2024-2025 school year. Steffey will be acting as interim principal while current WMS Principal Betsy Gavron is on sabbatical, and he will be in this position from July 1 until June 30, 2024.
Before becoming the Concord Middle School assistant principal, Steffey was the assistant principal of the John W. McDevitt Middle School and Denver Elementary School, founded the high school Spanish program at Boston Collegiate Charter School, was an assistant director of El Colegio de St. Joseph Mary in Uruguay and taught on the Texas-Mexico border as a member of the Teach For America organization.
“During Steffey’s interview and in my conversations with his references, a number of important qualities jumped out: [Steffey’s] calm and collaborative manner, his accessibility to staff and families and his deep knowledge of middle schools and adolescents,” Graham wrote.
The WMS interim principal search committee that assisted Graham in selecting the interim principal included members of the WMS leadership team and Wayland parents. As the 2024 school year approaches, Steffey will be working closely with Graham, Gavron and the WMS leadership team to make the transition into the role of interim principal as smooth as possible.
“Because we had a quick process that did not provide broad opportunities to meet him, [Steffey] is looking forward to connecting directly with staff, families and students in the coming months,” Graham wrote.
