On Thursday, Nov. 23, Thanksgiving morning, the Wayland High School Warriors will take on Weston High School’s Wildcats at 10 a.m. on Wayland High School’s turf. The student fan section’s psych is orange and black, Wayland’s colors.
The annual Wayland-Weston Thanksgiving football game started in 1934. Wayland won the first game, and now the Warriors have a 53-30 record on the Wildcats. In the last 10 years, the record has been 8-1-1.
“Coach has been motivating us about this big rivalry game and we really want to show all the work we have been putting in during this [game],” cornerback sophomore Braylen Jenkins said. “Our whole team has been putting in a lot of work and we hope it translates to this big rivalry game so we can get a win for the seniors and our town.”
Since the Thanksgiving game is the Warriors’ last game of the season, they have been practicing intensely for the game, incorporating morning lifts and after-school practices into their schedules. They hope to win this year’s game to make up for last year’s loss to Weston.
“We have been practicing regularly and preparing for the game like any big game. We lost this game last year so our plan is to go out on Thanksgiving and dominate,” linebacker junior Ben Hynes said. “We have had extra motivation this season with this big rivalry. This game means a lot to us.”
