On Tuesday, April 20, the Wayland girls varsity lacrosse team defeated Cambridge Rindge and Latin (CRL) with a final score of 15-2.
First quarter:
In the first quarter of the game, Wayland came out strong. They won the opening draw and quickly moved the ball into the offensive zone. Wayland scored two goals before CRL was able to get possession of the ball. CRL pushed harder nearing the end of the quarter but they weren’t able to get a shot on goal. Meanwhile, Wayland scored six more goals. At the end of the first quarter the score was 8-0.
Second quarter:
CRL came out strong and eager to score. They continued to push and were able to maintain possession for a period of time, but their shots either missed the net or were saved by freshman goaltender Frankie Zilembo. Zilembo’s save of the game was made on a breakaway from CRL. Despite their efforts, CRL still couldn’t get any goals past Zilembo and the score was 10-0 at the half.
Third quarter:
Wayland was up 10 goals, meaning the game clock was continuously running, even after a goal was scored. Sophomore Annie Melander opened the scoring in the third quarter. Despite this, CRL was still trying to get their first of the game. Wayland defense was strong and was able to keep the CRL offense to the perimeter of the eight meter arc for most of the time. One shot was able to slip by Zilembo and the Falcons now had their first goal against the Warriors. Wayland didn’t let them rejoice for long as they responded by scoring two more goals. At the end of the third quarter, the score was 13-1.
Fourth quarter:
Going into the fourth quarter, Wayland scored first. The Warrior defense remained strong, only allowing one CRL goal in the fourth. The final goal of the game was from senior Lilly O’Driscoll off a great pass from junior Lily Cerne. The final score of the game was a 15-2 Warrior win.
The girls lacrosse team has a tradition where the Player of the Game gets a toy dog that they named Rachel to take home until the next game. The “Rachel of the Game” was O’Driscoll after she scored two goals as a defender.
