On Thursday April 25, the Wayland boys varsity baseball team defeated Assabet Valley High School. Wayland’s strong outfield and powerful pitches led them to an 11-1 victory after five innings.

First half of the game:
The game started off with senior captain Ezra Wyner pitching for Wayland, striking out Assabet’s first batter. Wayland had a quick top of the first inning, only giving Assabet one run. The bottom of the first inning most definitely did not go by quickly. Wayland had a strong batting line-up, starting with senior captain Finn Bumstead, who scored the first run for Wayland. The second inning was much like the first, with Wyner pitching and an outfield catch by junior Michael Frank. The second inning ended 4-1 with Wayland on top.

Second half of the game:
Keeping their lead and not letting Assabet get any runs, Wayland switched its pitcher to junior Luke Chisum for the third and forth innings. Wayland dominated again at bat, scoring five more runs in the third and fourth inning. Senior Brendan Hines got a walk, and senior Adam Lange had a hard hit which went directly into the back of the pitcher. In the fifth inning, the pitcher changed to senior Garrett Batt. Wayland’s outfield had a couple big plays, including a deep outfield catch by junior Owen Finnegan. Junior Matty Johansson almost hit a home run, getting two players home, as well as getting to second base himself. The game was decided to only go to five innings because of the large score difference between Wayland and Assabet. To round out the game, junior Santi Whelton threw to junior Jamie Buffum to get the last out to end the game.

The final score was 11-1 for the Wayland Warriors. The team rejoiced in the outfield with their coaches, Chris Fay and Bo Finnigan.
