Voluntary evacuation of Pelham Island Road
Residents of Pelham Island Road near Wayland’s Town Center were encouraged to evacuate their homes last night due to serious flooding. The evacuees have not been provided with a place to stay during the evacuation period and will have to make their own living arrangements.
According to the Wayland Police Department, Pelham Island Road is not closed to the public, but due to the weather and dangerous road conditions a shuttle bus has been provided to residents so they can get to and from their homes.
Overflow parking for homeowners’ vehicles will be available on Route 20. A return date for residents has not yet been projected.
“I just really wish it would stop raining,” sighed Pelham Island Road resident Rebecca Black, a WHS freshman.
A duck boat and national guard trucks were brought in earlier this month to deal with flooding around the Pelham Island area. The Wayland Town Library is also closed because of the rain, but no materials have been damaged.
Five inches of rain have already fallen during this latest storm, and three more inches are expected tonight. Forecasts call for the storm to continue into tomorrow, Wednesday.
The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for Middlesex County, and says that this month’s storms could break the March rainfall record set in 1953.
