It’s the start of a new school year at Wayland High School, and most students are excited for change. The newly renovated field house with spotless locker rooms, clean new bathrooms and showers and fancy water fountains are a preview of the changes we will welcome in the new school. The atmosphere on campus is very similar to the enthusiasm of our nation in January 2009.
The inauguration of President Barack Obama was a cause for high spirits and patriotism for many. America was filled with hope for the “change” which Obama promised. However, America is still waiting for this change to come, especially with respect to America’s economy, healthcare and unemployment problems.
When Obama’s presidency started, the United States was in a recession. With the promises of a new president, we looked forward to the end of the economic troubles plaguing our country. Unfortunately, the major problems that our country faced in January 2009 still exist more than halfway through Obama’s term.
Our economy is only slightly more stable than it was in late 2008. On August 8th, 2011 the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by more than 630 points. The next day, the market gained points; on August 10th, the market again fell. This was followed by another gain, creating a roller coaster of increases and decreases.
One of Obama’s main promises was to create a national healthcare program, otherwise known as “Obamacare.” In early 2010, Obamacare was signed into law; however, almost a year and a half later, Americans fail to be impacted by this legislation. It is predicted that we will see no great impact from Obama’s healthcare law until 2014, with only minor influences currently in effect.
The President’s failure to compromise on his healthcare plan has brought about numerous setbacks, including questions of the constitutionality of a national healthcare policy. If Obamacare was a constitutional compromise that satisfied both parties, our nation’s healthcare system might have been changed for the better with quicker results and a larger impact. In its current state, the health care issue remains unsolved and has an uncertain future.
Unemployment continues to be one of America’s biggest problems. In December 2008, our nation’s unemployment rate was 7.3%. This number peaked in October of 2009 at 10.1% and since then has unsteadily risen and fallen between 10.1% to 8.8%.
Obama’s latest plan to decrease this number was outlined in his televised speech on September 8th. The plan calls for $450 billion of spending — an astronomical amount of money that Obama should recognize will bring about intense debate among political parties, thus furthering the delay of any improvements in the job market.
This number should be lowered to a bare minimum, preventing more job cuts and creating as many jobs as possible within a restricted budget. With a lower cost, the political parties will argue less and the necessary portion of the plan can go into effect with minimal delay. Republicans and Democrats can argue about the remainder of the plan after the necessities have been agreed upon.
Three major problems our country faced when President Barack Obama entered office still exist today. There have been minimal improvements at best with respect to our economy, America’s healthcare system and the job market. We are still waiting to see the positive results of Obama’s much promised “change”. Luckily for Wayland High School, it appears that change really will be coming in January.

A few things:
1. Did you expect Obama to wave his magic wand and heal the economy immediately after being elected? Fixing the problems created by the Bush Administration is incredibly complex and takes time.
2. I don't see how Obama could possibly help the economy when the Republican-dominated House of Rep. refuses to pass any legislature. You said, "Obama should recognize will bring about intense debate among political parties, thus furthering the delay of any improvements in the job market." Are you suggesting that Obama should simply support the entire Republican agenda just to avoid conflict? Of course, during his presidency, he has often settled and compromised with Republicans – a major flaw in his presidency. Look at where that has gotten us.
3. To create jobs, increasing spending is absolutely essential. Cutting taxes and decreasing spending just won't get it done.
I'm not saying I've supported everything Obama has done during his presidency. Our nation could have used a stronger leader. However, it is absolutely impossible blame him for everything that has happened in the past year and a half..

1. No, not at all. I recognize that Obama was entering office in a time of economic turmoil. However, he promised "change". His term is more than half over and we have still very little positive change as he suggested he would bring about as president.
2. I am in no way suggesting that Obama should simply support the Republicans. Please re-read the above post, and note that I suggested he compromise instead.
3. I agree with you, we do need to spend money to create jobs. The problem is how MUCH money. This is clearly said in the blog.

People need to stop blaming things on Bush – these problems come from president's before – he was set up in the problem.

This is uninformed garbage. The question of constitutionality was raised by a lone VA judge to make headlines and the claim has since been refuted by constitutional experts across the nation. What is this about Obama's failure to compromise? The man has conceded everything reasonable and more due to the relentless obstinacy of Republicans in congress. And while Obama hasn't done what many of us hoped for as president, but lets not forget that the previous administration left him to clean up an economic mess of little precedence. Please come up with something more original. I respect you for taking the "disregarded perspective" but this just sounds like the rest of the rhetoric spewed by pundits on Fox news.

RUDE. I don't care what you believe (and I think personally think you ought to not swallow public opinion because it's usually a little misinformed. For ex, actually a lot of people have debated over Obamacare's contstitutionality not just the judge from VA. Also every Administration leaves a mess for the one following it and Bush was no exception and Obama won't be an exception either.) but I think that you should be a lot slower to cut down someone's opinion and writing.
Also, if you've ever watched Fox News (which is mostly crap), this is nothing like it.

Unfortunately, you seem to be misinformed. Please look at the links I posted below.
On the day Obama signed the health care bill into law, 12 state attorney generals had already filed lawsuits against it (http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/HealthCare/obama-sign-health-care-bill-law-republicans-challenge/story?id=10176898) . In addition, American civilians are also filing lawsuits against Obamacare (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2016197728_healthruling14.html).
Secondly, this blog was created to counter the more frequent opposing viewpoints. It has original ideas created by the authors. We want discussions such as these to follow our blog posts, so thank you for contributing your ideas.
P.S.- I do not watch Fox news.

You said it yourself, Obama hasn't done what many of us hoped for as president. Regardless of the situation prior to his election, you liberals elected him to "fix" things. Which he clearly has not done. We don't elect a president to make things worse, so obviously he was elected to fix something. The "Obama inherited a mess" theory is getting OLD. The man has had quite a bit of time now to fix things, and he has not. When he was elected liberals talked about him as some sort of savior, and now you're all back pedaling saying he inherited a mess. So maybe YOU should come up with something more original.
