- Kenya Heard, a Wayland High School senior, is the first place winner of the 2011-2012 Massachusetts InvestWrite competition, achieving Wayland High School’s sixth consecutive year of placing state or nationwide in this competition.
Swoosh, nothing but net. Some students may recognize Kenya Heard for her skills on the basketball court, but recently, a different group of people recognized her for her academic achievement in the world of investing.
Every year, some Wayland High School students taking Investing in the Creative Economy (ICE) write a paper called the InvestWrite essay. After teachers grade the papers, they pick 10 students from each class to submit their essays for state and national judging.
Winners of this competition must follow numerous guidelines for their essays. From the moment students start their essay outline, they are able to showcase the knowledge they have learned in the classroom.
This year, Kenya Heard, a senior at Wayland High School, placed first in Massachusetts, making this year the sixth consecutive year a student from Wayland has placed at the national or state level.
“I think it’s awesome,” said business teacher James Page. “I think it’s awesome for the school. It shows a lot about the business program. It shows that Wayland students continue to excel.”
A representative from the InvestWrite committee drove to Wayland High School to present Heard with the honor.
“I was really, really surprised when she came in. I thought it was one of the other 10 people,” Heard said. “But when it was me, I was really, really shocked.”
ICE is not the first business course that Heard has taken.
“I took Entrepreneurship and Business Management (EBM) last year, and I liked Mr. Page a lot so I took ICE this year,” said Heard.
As a soccer, basketball and softball player, Heard is also active outside of the classroom. With college in the near future, Heard is still undecided about if she wants to further her business achievements.
“I don’t know if I’ll go into it as a profession, but I think the class is very valuable in terms of everyday investing,” said Heard.
