On Saturday, June 9, the boys’ tennis team played Reading in the Division 2 North Championship at Newton South High School. Wayland defeated the Reading Rockets in a 3-2 win.
Wayland sophomore Ethan Hecker got the Warriors off to a fast start by winning his match quickly 6-3, 6-1. Freshman Will Sharton won his match shortly after 6-3, 6-2.
Reading won both of the doubles matches. Wayland’s first ranked doubles team of senior co-captain Drew Levy and freshman Tommy Davlin lost 6-3, 6-1. Wayland’s second ranked doubles team of senior co-captain Jackson Hubbell and sophomore Josh O’neil lost 6-4, 6-3.
With the match tied 2-2, it all came down to the second doubles match. Sophomore Jon Goodman beat Reading’s second ranked singles player in a 3 set match. The final score was 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.
“I tried not to think too much about the situation I was in because I knew I had to focus on each point I was playing,” Goodman said. “It felt great to win the match and keep our season alive.”
Wayland came into the match on a 14 match win streak in which they only lost 10 sets.
The Warriors then played in the Division 2 State Championship at Newton North on Tuesday June 12, at 3:30.
They came out on top beating Sharon 3-2 making them the 2012 Division 2 State Champions.
Sharon won both the doubles matches. The first doubles team lost 6-0, 6-2 and second doubles lost 7-5, 6-3. With three singles games left Wayland needed to win all 3.
Wayland singles got off to a strong start when freshman Will Sharton won 6-4, 6-2. Sophomore Ethan Hecker came back winning his match 1-6, 6-1, 6-0.
Just like in the North Finals it was up to sophomore Jon Goodman. With a state title on the line Goodman came out of top 7-5, 6-3 giving Wayland tennis another state championship.
