Howdy readers!
I’m Kevin Capasso, a senior here at WHS, and I love music. It can set the tone for my day, brighten my mood, get me through some tough homework, pump me up enough to actually exercise or calm me down after a stressful day. When I hear a truly great song, it evokes a feeling inside me that I simply cannot describe with words alone. My goal for this blog is to convey those great feelings to as many people as possible.
Before I get down to business, I’ll tell everyone a little bit about myself. My main instrument is guitar, which I have been playing for six years now. I can also hold a beat on drums, pluck away on bass and play some chords on the piano. I’ve tried my hand at composing some jazz tunes, writing a few acoustic songs, producing electronic music and creating rap beats.
Now I know musical taste is subjective for the most part, but I listen to a wide variety of music, so I’m confident everyone can find something they like on my blog. The first music I got into was rock, alternative and punk. Then I began listening to progressive rock and jazz, and rap caught my ear as I started high school. I moved on to R&B and blues, and over the past year or so, I’ve really gotten into electronic music. The only genres I dislike are country and heavy metal, but I do enjoy some Johnny Cash and Metallica on occasion.
Finally, it’s time for some music!
This is The Mars Volta:

They are my favorite band because their sound is so diverse, but their music always resonates with me and has a great, unique feeling. Warning! They are progressive rock, so they can get a bit odd and dissonant at times, but that’s why I enjoy them.
Now for some rap. You’ve probably heard of Big Sean before; he has the song where the beginning repeats the expletive for butt. He dropped a free mixtape entitled “Detroit” on September 5. I wasn’t that into him before, but this mixtape really showed me how diverse a rapper he is. He flows over trap beats with ease and rhythmic ingenuity and comes up with some witty lines on some classy Kanye productions. Here’s a preview of the mixtape:

ELECTRONIC TIME.
My blog will have a very loose and eclectic format, but I plan on always including a new electronic track, mix, EP, LP, single or remix in some shape or form. As a heads up, I find electronic genre labeling annoying and confusing, so don’t take offense if I mislabel a song.
This song is a collaboration between two already successful producers, Hudson Mohawke and Lunice. They released an eponymous EP entitled “TNGHT,” and I must say, it’s very impressive. You can hear their individual styles blend together to much success, and the EP sounds like a glitchy, hip hop and electronic masterpiece. Check out this song entitled “Bugg’n”:
