The Good News: Week of Nov. 2
All-day long, we are accosted by negative headlines. In a world where stories like these are the epicenter of our lives, maintaining a positive outlook on life can be hard. Let’s face it: if negative headlines are the only ones we hear about, it’s hard not to be negative ourselves. We are all in need of a healthy dose of optimism. So, in order to brighten up your day and hopefully counteract the negativity, here is a current event that, indisputably, qualifies as good news.
Data from the EPA tells us that the fashion industry produces 10% of the nation’s total methane emissions and 5% of its landfill capacity. Both of these negatively contribute to climate change. International fashion brand H&M has recently taken steps to combat this issue. They have created a machine that shreds old clothes into their component fibers, cleans them, and weaves them into yarn. This yarn, made from completely recycled material, can then be sold to create new garments. In doing this, the machine does not use any additional dyes or contribute to water waste. These machines are currently installed in H&M branches in Europe and are available to any global H&M branch that wants to employ the technology. Not only is H&M willing to give this technology to other retail brands, they are encouraging it. This machine, called Loop, was made in collaboration with H&M’s non-profit charity the H&M Foundation.
“To fight climate change, we need to change fashion,” H&M said in a press release.
To find out more about this innovative, climate-change combatting technology, you can read this H&M press release or this Nov. 3 article which highlights this good news.
