By unanimous vote, the Wayland School Committee elected to appoint Interim Superintendent David Fleishman as the permanent superintendent of Wayland Public Schools on Monday, Nov. 4. School Committee Chair Erin Gibbons will finalize the language of the agreement with legal counsel, and will sign the agreement on behalf of the board in the near future.
In April of 2023, Fleishman was selected as the interim superintendent of WHS following both the committee’s decision to place former Superintendent Omar Easy on paid administrative leave, and Acting Superintendent Parry Graham’s hiring as superintendent at Lincoln Public Schools. Since Fleishman’s original appointment, he was reappointed in October of 2023 and has been the interim superintendent for a total of 18 months
Leading up to the vote for Fleishman to be considered for a permanent superintendent role, members of the school committee praised Fleishman for building and developing a high-performing team of educators, working with and strengthening a new team of leaders and doing so in a collaborative way.
“I think we have a lot of reasons to support us talking to [Fleishman] about his willingness to stay on board,” Gibbons said.
The school committee adds that Fleishman followed the same review process that was given to the other candidates for the interim superintendent role. Gibbons further notes that Fleishman’s role as interim superintendent through the past 18 months has been demonstrative of an interview process.
“He’s had an 18-month interview process,” Gibbons said. “The more I thought about it, and the more I really reviewed the feedback that we’ve received from community members, from town government members, internal employees, administrators, people that I really trust, respect and value, [the more I realized] it was genuine feedback. It was genuine in the fact that they are really gaining value from their relationships with [Fleishman] as an educator, as a leader and as a mentor.”
