After nearly two weeks of preseason and scrimmages, it was time for the 2011 fall season to officially start.
As a whole, the Warriors did not get off to the start they wanted; only the field hockey team was victorious. As teams found out, you cannot afford to start slow against Dual County League (DCL) opponents.
However, the season is still young, and teams should not panic. They should only learn from the rough start and try to improve.
Both the girls and the boys soccer teams found themselves matched up with DCL Large foe Lincoln-Sudbury. This was no easy feat for either Warrior team, let alone on the second day of school. The boys started off with a hopeful 1-0 lead when senior Hadrien Symon dropped one behind the keeper in the first half. The game stayed competitive throughout, but L-S netted two second half goals, winning the game with a final score of 2-1.
The girls had to travel to L-S and came home with a 1-0 loss. Though both teams lost, they put forth solid efforts against a powerful DCL Large team.
Tyngsboro and Arlington, who were the two newest members to the DCL, are now gone. This caused Boston Latin to shift to the now five team DCL Small. Apparently, the DCL is just too tough for some towns to handle.
This realignment made the scheduling process change. Last year, the soccer teams played DCL Large teams once and DCL Small teams twice. This year the teams play select DCL Large teams twice as well as DCL Small teams.
Unluckily for the soccer teams, they happen to play L-S, Acton-Boxborough and Westford Academy twice this year. There is little margin for error this year for either soccer squad with such a demanding schedule.
Unfortunately, each team slipped up again on Friday, both losing to Waltham, and both are now 0-2 after the first week.
The volleyball team started the season 0-2 as well, but there is excitement surrounding the new Varsity coach Krissy Norman. Volleyball is still a fairly new sport at the high school, but the program is trying to make strides this year.
The young football team traveled to King Phillip and suffered a 42-7 loss, giving up all 42 points in the first half. On the bright side, they ruined the shutout in the 4th quarter. Hopefully, they can carry that momentum into the home opener this Friday against Nauset Regional High School.
In case you weren’t aware, there’s a Stomp after the game. I respect what Coach Smith and his “youth leaders” are trying to do by providing these events, but it’s up to the students to decide whether or not it will be a success. I say at least give it a try, there are only three this year, so make them count.
Anyways, it was not all negative during the first week of the season. The field hockey team went to Concord-Carlise and left with an 4-0 victory. The defending DCL Small champs are off to an impressive start. Hopefully they keep it up and defend their championship.
Teams will surely put in a lot of work at practice this week after the wake up call from the first few games. The DCL is unforgiving and hopefully teams take it to ‘em this week.
On the bright side, the NFL started this weekend, you know what that means, fantasy football baby, awwww yeah.
Check out Warrior Scores for the week’s latest scores, as well as next week’s blog, which will continue to check-in with the teams. Let’s hope for some W’s this week!
