Well, the promising signs I noted last week turned into reality this week, as Warrior nation flexed its muscles.

The football and volleyball teams picked up their first victories of the season, hats off to them. In fact, this has been the best week overall for the fall teams, with a total of seven wins, two more than had been tallied in the previous two weeks. Things are looking up for most teams as the leaves begin to change.

Girls volleyball started the week with a rematch against Norton. If you remember, they forced Norton to five games last week. This time, the same situation occurred, except the girls won the fifth set, and captured their first victory. To follow that performance, they took down Waltham in four games. Unfortunately the streak ended there and they fell to Bedford on Friday.

However, another team tasted victory for the first time this year on Friday. The football team went to South Boston and came home with a 34-20 win. Starting quarterback Matt Goddard scored three total touchdowns, two passing and one on the ground. The Warriors did not get discouraged when South Boston struck first. They answered by dominating the second and third quarter by a score of 28-0. So for all of you who said they wouldn’t win a game this year, there you go.

I’ll admit, there’s something of a rivalry between soccer and football players, but at the same time, I’m rooting for them. I’m glad to see we don’t have a case of the ‘08 Lions on our hands. Plus, this week’s win is a great momentum builder going into DCL Small play. Next Friday, the “road” Warriors are at Boston Latin. Hopefully they don’t play on a field that has just been aerated minutes before kickoff like the boys soccer team did.

Speaking of boys soccer, we had a solid week. We fell to Newton South 2-1 on Tuesday due to a poor performance overall in the first half. Our late second half push was not enough to tie the game, and our record fell to 2-3. On Thursday we travelled to Weston.

Thanks to our European talent, we came away with a 4-3 victory. Senior captain Nico Pascual-Leone had a hat trick in the first half as the teams went back and forth. Pascual-Leone was hurt on his third goal and was unable to play in the second half, but his brother, freshman Andres Pascual-Leone, picked up where Nico left off and scored our fourth goal. The two Spanish brothers received assists from “The Belgian,” Hadrien Symon.

Maybe this is why Americans won’t embrace soccer; we just aren’t as good as the Europeans. We have our first three game week of the year this week, which will be concluded with our Kicks For Cancer game at Concord-Carlise High School at 7:30. All proceeds go to cancer research, so if you’re free Saturday night, come.

The girls soccer team dropped both their games this week, unable to score a goal. The girls offense is a lot like the Red Sox right now, abysmal. Only scoring in one game this year, they’re searching for a consistent offensive weapon. But I have faith in both the girls and the Red Sox  to turn it around. The girls have three games this week, and it’s a little early to say it’s do or die, but at the same time, this week is crucial for the girls, and they know it. The girls also have a night game on Saturday, so you should try to make it to either one. The schedules have been a doozy this year for the soccer teams.

Now to the hottest team at school right now. The girls field hockey team won all three of their games this week, even the one on grass, which I’ve been told changes the game. The team seems to be clicking on all cylinders and only has one game this week; a face-off against Lincoln-Sudbury at home on Tuesday.

Their hot start even has the team somewhat surprised, but they got me on their bandwagon, and I’m along for the ride. Hop on, there’s plenty of room for you too. If you don’t know the rules, I’d be glad to teach you. The only objection I have with this team is their warm-up CD. Other than that, keep winning.

By the end of next week, it will already be October. Teams have had enough time to develop chemistry, and now it’s time to perform. Hopefully next week will be a lot like this one. As always, check Warrior Scores for this week’s latest scores. And try to make it to some games to support the teams!
