Thank God. Look at the weather. Spring is finally here. No more snow days (I hope), no more skidding in my car and no more spring practices in the fieldhouse. That last one brings me the most excitement. Practices in the fieldhouse were absolutely terrible.
All of the sports had to share the tiny space of the gym. Baseball was quarantined in the wrestling room. All 30 of us had to share one batting cage. I don’t even think the boys’ tennis team was able to have practice. The girls’ tennis team spent their practices shoveling the snow off of the courts. It was terrible.
But we made it. Starting Monday, all of the spring sports will finally get to play outside and enjoy this nice weather that we have been having. The schedule for the spring season will be up within the week, so for all of you who were worrying where it was, worry no more. Until games officially start, there isn’t much for me to talk about here. But here’s a spring sports preview to keep you busy.
Readers of Warrior Weekly, I have a very important announcement for you. I have waited 180 days to say this. I could not be more excited. The Red Sox play the Yankees tomorrow! Unlike most Red Sox fans, I am actually pretty optimistic about this season. I expect big things from them this year. In fact, I have $100 riding betting they will win the division.
I don’t really have a good transition into this, but it sure pays to be a professional athlete. Just on Saturday, $455 million dollars were dished out to three different players. Justin Verlander, Buster Posey and Tony Romo all became really, really rich. As a sports fan, I think it is important to pay the top player top money but this is ridiculous. The most ridiculous part is that college players don’t get paid any money (legally).
Since it is March Madness season, we will use the NCAA tournament as an example. In 2010, the NCAA signed a TV deal for the tournament that was worth $771 million in annual revenues. The players see none of this money. The players are playing the games and are providing the entertainment on the court. I watch the games to see Trey Burke, Aaron Craft, the entire FGCU team, Victor Oladipo, Otto Porter (thanks for ruining my bracket) etc. These players should be getting some of the money that the NCAA is making.
Well anyway, I hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend, especially the spring weather.
Since I didn’t have a blog last week, I’m going to end my post this week with two quotes.
“Baseball has a heart of gold. It has a humanity that other sports, they just don’t have … and humanity is funnier.” –Jerry Seinfeld
“You always get a special kick on Opening Day, no matter how many you go through. You look forward to it like a birthday party when you’re a kid. You think something wonderful is going to happen.” —Joe DiMaggio
