It’s that time of the year again! Winter sports season has begun. This week is when the hard work our teams have put in will be tested. To start out the winter season, boys’ and girls’ swimming and diving kicked off with a great dual meet against Bedford yesterday.
On the girls side, Wayland was filling up the score sheet. Senior Mindy Lou qualified for states and secured a first place finish in her 100 freestyle. Senior Becca Wuerfl achieved her own personal goal on the 500 freestyle by breaking the elusive six minute barrier, which earned her a first place as well. On the diving side, the girls had a great showing. Led by junior Elizabeth Miller, who had the highest scoring dive of the night, the girls swept first, second and third. Elizabeth Miller, Abby Stoller and Kathleen Burns grabbed those places, respectively, and earned enough points to qualify for states. The final tally of the girls’ win was 95-78.
The boys’ side also had a great night. Senior Drew Donovan won the 100 butterfly, coming close to the state qualifying time. Senior Ryan Campbell was able to qualify for sectionals in the 100 backstroke, as well as win the event. Senior Alex Chused also had a great meet winning the 1-meter dives. The final tally of the boys’ win was 92-74.
Girls’ basketball kicked also off their season on yesterday against Marlborough. The game started out slowly, but after the first two minutes the girls picked it up, and momentum shifted in our direction. By the end of the first quarter, we had the lead and did not let it up. We played at our tempo and were able to hold Marlboro off. There were no standouts in the game, and it was a group effort that I am very proud of. The final score of the game was 56-43.
Boys’ basketball will kick off their season at 7 p.m. tonight at Lincoln-Sudbury. Boys’ ice hockey will start their season tomorrow at 12:20 p.m. against Newton South at Ryan Arena. Wrestling will also begin tomorrow at 9 a.m. in Holliston.
