The Wayland Police Department have issued a warning on the rise of scammers during the holiday season. “Hang up [the phone]. if you get a text and you do not know who it's from, just delete it. Don't click on any links, nothing,” Wayland police chief Edward Burman said. “Every single one of them is a scam.”
Police department issues warnings about holiday scams
WHS’s Connect Program ran its annual holiday gift drive to fulfill the wishlist of children enrolled in the Dorchester based non-profit daycare organization, the Yawkey Center. This drive brought the town together and impacted both the students in Connect, as well as the greater Wayland community. “You could see how helpful the town was and how our community came together and wanted to help out a community that wasn't our own [and] kids who were less fortunate than we were,” senior and Connect Program member Jordynn Lee said.

Wayland High School will be hosting its second annual Wayland Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Fair on Sunday, Dec. 8 in the high school commons. Co-organizers and seniors Arya Samaratunga and Eunjee Kang worked together to plan an event where anyone can come and embrace the intricacy of the STEM program and community.

Many decorations are placed around a house in Wayland as a tradition to make the Stewart families front yard a winter wonderland. While it may seem simple to others, decorating their house brings the Stewart family together for the holidays and has made this time of the year more cheerful for all of them. “Adding something new each year keeps it fun and the kids each choose something to add,” L. Stewart said.
A holiday house like no other
Chocolate Therapy co-owner Pam Griffin smiles at the counter of her chocolate shop, located on 63 Andrew Ave. in the Wayland Town Center. The shop sells a variety of handmade chocolates, coffee, hot chocolate, ice cream and more. Recently, Chocolate Therapy's nut bark was named to "Oprah's Favorite Things 2024 List." The nut bark comes in a box with three flavors: milk chocolate cashew, dark chocolate almond and white chocolate pistachio.

WHS student-run nonprofit organization, Hoops For a Home Court, is dedicated towards raising money for a public sports community center in Wayland. After raising over $20,000, co-leader and junior Cole Zachery explained that there was still more to be done. “This is definitely a step in the right direction, but we have a lot more to do before we reach our final goal,” Zachery said.

The Boy Scouts will be selling trees on Fridays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays noon to 6 p.m. until they sell out. “This event is one of the things that [the Boy Scouts] get to have a direct impact on the community,” freshman Alex Macleod said.

WHS guidance counselor Jim Girard is now coaching Wayland football after stepping down from being Lincoln Sudbury's head coach. “I stepped down as the head coach at LS following the 2023 season so that I could spend more time with and care for my ailing parents who live out of state,” Girard said.

Three Wayland High School (WHS) teams are still in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association playoffs. On Nov. 6, the girls volleyball team swept Greater New Bedford 3-0 and are now in the Elite 8 and hosting Bishop Fenwick on Friday Nov. 8. Boys soccer is playing Marblehead at the WHS turf on Nov. 7. Football is playing no.7 Burlington on Friday Nov. 8 away.

"Along with some great memories of playing football, we have also had some great laughs and a lot of fun with these seniors. They set a high standard for everyone that is coming up in the Wayland football program."
