Summer 2024 was full of major events that sent shockwaves through the U.S. and the entire world. From an attempted assassination of former U.S. President Donald Trump, to the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games, Inside Out 2 and much more, the headlines didn’t stop, even during summer. Below are 10 major news stories of summer 2024.
Inside Out 2 sweeps American theaters.
On June 14, the second installment in the Inside Out series was continued. The movie featured four new emotions, including Anxiety, Ennui, Embarrassment and Envy. Inside Out 2 gained over one billion dollars in just 19 days of the initial release.
Tony Awards
On June 16, the 77th annual Tony Awards aired on Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS). The Tony Awards feature musicals and plays from the previous year and give out awards for them. This award is one of the most coveted awards in the entertainment industry.
Boston Celtics clinch their 18th National Basketball Association (NBA) Finals trophy.
On June 17, the Boston Celtics won the NBA’s 76th Finals trophy with a game-five defeat against the Dallas Mavericks, 106-88.
Trump and Joe Biden had their first and last debate.
On June 27, former President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden held a debate airing on Cable News Network (CNN). Biden dropped out of the presidential race only three days later.
Thomas Matthew Crooks attempted an assassination on Trump.
Trump was shot in the ear at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13. Trump survived with minor injuries, and two supporters were also wounded and one died. This is the eighth assassination attempt on a president in U.S. history.
The Republican National Convention
Through July 15 – 18, the Republican National Convention occurred in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Republican Party nominated Trump and U.S. senator from Ohio J.D. Vance to run for office.
Major League Baseball (MLB) All- Star Game
The MLB All-Star Game took place in Arlington, Texas, at Globe Life Field on July 16. Jarren Duran from the Boston Red Sox won Most Valuable Player during the game.
2024 Paris Olympic Summer Games
Through July 26-Aug. 11, the 2024 Olympic games were hosted in Paris, France. During the games, 17 world records were broken. The U.S. finished with the most medals overall with a count of 126. The U.S. had a gold medal count of 40, tying with China.
The Democratic National Convention
The Democratic National Convention took place in Chicago, Illinois, from Aug. 19-22.Vice President Kamala Harris and the Governor of Minnesota, Tim Walz, were nominated by the Democratic Party to run for the positions of President and Vice President.
Short n’ Sweet, released by Sabrina Carpenter
On August 23, Sabrina Carpenter released her sixth studio album, Short n’ Sweet. Carpenter’s album debuted at number one on the Billboard top 200 album chart.
