On Wednesday, Oct. 30, smoke at a Wayland resident’s home near the middle school field was reported at approximately 12:25 p.m.. Firefighters from Wayland arrived soon after to extinguish the fire using their hoselines. The department brought additional aid from the surrounding towns of Framingham, Natick and Sudbury to help determine if the fire had spread through the rest of the home. The fire trucks from the surrounding towns left around 2:10 p.m..
The homeowner’s son, Micheal Maillet, stated that his aunt called him immediately to let him know of the smoke that was in his parents home. Maillet’s aunt was with his parents at the time that the smoke was reported while Maillet was in Holliston.
“I was very panicked and scared at first and then [my aunt] told me that she got everybody out of the house so that made [me feel] much better,” Maillet said.
As of now, the fire department is still investigating and cannot make any statements for the cause of the smoke and fire. Assistant Fire Chief of Wayland Richard Ripley and Maillet advise calling the fire department right away if you have a fire in your home.
“I always say [to] have working smoke detectors in your home,” Ripley said. “They help save lives by telling people well in advance of any major issues if they should exit their home. I always tell people, if you have a fire in your home, don’t try to put it out. Exit the home, call 911 and get us coming [to help you] as quickly as possible.”
