As the leaves transform into an array of reds, oranges and golds, and the cool breeze begins to hint at the arrival of fall, the world of fashion undergoes its own transition. The weather can’t be controlled, but one thing we can regulate is our outfit. The transitional time between fall and winter can be challenging for our fashion sense, with several of your favorite pieces having to go back into storage bins to make space for warmer clothes as the temperatures drop. Dressing up for in-between weather can complicate outfits when you don’t know what to expect, but building a wardrobe with transitional pieces doesn’t have to be difficult.
Making simple clothing swaps can help ease you into the change of seasons. You can change tee-shirts and tank tops for a long sleeve or sweater. You can even continue to wear a tank top, but layer it with a cardigan or jacket. Another trade could be from jean shorts or skirts to jeans or leggings. Several outfits that look good with jean shorts also look good with a simple pair of jeans.

“It’s unfortunate that I have to put away summer clothes,” senior Drew Greeley said. “But wearing clothes for colder weather isn’t terrible.”
One of the most significant steps in preparing for women’s and men’s winter fashion is investing in the right jacket. Look for insulation and waterproof features to keep you warm and dry as the days begin to get colder, snowier and rainier.
“I love my Aritzia super-puff jacket for when it gets colder because it’s really thick and puffy and keeps me warm,” senior Abby Peredna said.

Your choice of footwear also transforms with the weather. Swap out your flip flops and sneakers for insulated boots, like UGGs, to keep your feet warm. To add to this look, you could pair it with some thick socks to increase comfort and warmth.

“UGGs are really nice because they go with so many outfits, like jeans or leggings, while also keeping my feet so warm and cozy,” junior Emily Wyner said. “The only bad part about them is when it’s raining or snowing because they get stained, then I’ll just wear my sneakers, which keep my feet pretty comfortable too.”
Just because it’s getting colder, doesn’t mean the tank tops and tee-shirts need to fully go away.
Adapt your style to changing seasons by stylish layering. At home, school or work, it may be too warm to wear outerwear, but too chilly for lighter outfits. However, when wearing a layered outfit, you can remove one thing and adjust your thermal comfort.

In the fall, lighter fabrics, like cotton and corduroy, are go to choices for some. They provide a comfortable and stylish option for the changing weather. Light wool can also make an appearance, adding warmth without bulk. On the other hand, as the winter chill sets in, opt for materials like cashmere, heavy wool, faux fur and down. These fabrics offer superior insulation and keep you warm even in the harshest weather conditions.
“It’s nice to change up what I’m wearing and start to wear different things as it starts to get colder,” junior Elle Mueller said. “I like wearing sweaters or a sweatshirt with jeans and wearing like cute vests over a sweatshirt with leggings.”
Color is also important when it comes to your outfits. As the weather changes, so do the colors you wear. In the fall, shades of brown, yellow, orange and red are typically worn. On the other hand, stick to wearing more “cool tones,” like blue, purple, grey and black during the winter months. Adding seasonal colors to your wardrobe can enhance your style.
“When it gets more into winter, I do change up what colors I wear because it’s winter,” Wyner said. “I’m getting pale and some colors that I would wear in the summer or fall wash me out and make me look paler, and I don’t want to look like that.”

When looking for inspiration for your style, Pinterest can be a great place to look for specific outfits. It’s easy to search for a certain look or ideas for outfits if you have somewhere to go that you need an outfit for. Along with searching for specifics, brands like Hollister, Brandy Melville and American Eagle sell lots of basics that are easy to mix and match to create new outfits.
“I love Pinterest, saving new ideas for outfits and other things is a lot of fun and when I don’t know what to wear it’s really helpful,” Peredna said.
Avoid taking the change of season as a depressing period. Instead, think of the season change as an opportunity to go further, refresh your style and make room for new emotions and clothes in your life.
