On Monday, Nov. 24, the Wayland High School Student Council hosted the annual Color Blast, a yearly spirit week tradition where all four grades decorate their designated wing with their assigned color.
Following Color Blast, there is a competition to see which grade decorates their wing best, judged by the teachers. The winning grade was awarded 50 points for the spirit week competition.
This year, the freshmen used the color green for the math wing, the sophomores used blue for the language wing, the juniors had red for the history wing and the seniors used black and orange for the english wing.
Organized by Student Council, Color Blast ran from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., and students were given the whole hour to decorate their designated wing. Students were provided supplies from Student Council, including glass markers, paint, paper banners and other supplies. Executive boards from each grade also provided some materials. Some of the supplies used were yarn, ribbon, streamers and LED lights.
“We did a ton of planning based on teacher feedback from last year’s Color Blast and found ways we could make it more environmentally friendly and more fun for all the students,” sophomore Student Council member Fiona Strehle said.
Color Blast has not gone to plan in recent years. According to an email titled “A note about the future of Color Blast” from English teacher and Student Council adviser John Keene, some students have trashed the school, interfered with other grades’ decorations or targeted specific students or teachers.
“In the five years that I have been the Student Council advisor, something terrible has happened during Color Blast every single year,” Keene wrote in an email to students.
According to Student Council, if this year’s Color Blast did not run accordingly, they will consider not running it in future years.
“Color Blast almost didn’t happen this year, [and] it might not happen again,” Keene wrote in an email to students. “Whether it does is primarily up to [the students].”
Following the event, various class presidents expressed satisfaction with the turnout and their respective grade’s performance.
“Honestly it was a great turnout, and I’m really happy with how we did this year,” sophomore class president Vik Chaudhry said. “Last year, we won [Color Blast], so we really wanted to carry that momentum into this year and get the class of 2028’s name out everywhere.”
Later on Tuesday, Nov. 25, Student Council announced the Class of 2028 as the winner based on their decorations in the language wing. This is the second year the Class of 2028 has won, including their win as freshmen.
“We’ve done [Color Blast] the last [three] years, and it’s been a really good way to get everyone together and socialize,” senior class president Ben Hammond said. “It’s just a really fun thing, I think this year was definitely memorable.”
