On Monday, May 18, the girls varsity lacrosse team defeated Woburn Memorial High School 15-7 in their senior night game. Heading into the game, Wayland’s record was 7-9. Before the game began, the team celebrated the seniors by giving high fives while they ran through a human tunnel and hugged their parents at the end.
“[The seniors] definitely encourage the team, whether it’s on the sidelines or on the field itself,” senior captain Sofia DiCarlo said. “If the other team scores, we always make sure to keep each other up, no matter who it is and give them encouragement and to make sure everyone is able to keep moving forward.”
The game started with a few quick goals from Wayland, with freshman Ella Berenson scoring twice to put Wayland up 5-2 by the end of the first quarter. Berenson is one of four freshmen on Wayland.
“We lost 12 seniors from last year, which was basically half our starting lineup,” DiCarlo said. “Our team was super young, but we’ve grown so much throughout the season.”
Wayland rapidly attacked the Woburn defense throughout the game and scored five more before Woburn could score another goal. Late in the second quarter, Woburn tightened their defense, but senior captain Annie Melander scored, which put Wayland up 12-3.
Early in the third quarter, Woburn launched a sudden offensive push and scored three more goals. Wayland scored two more to make the score 14-6, and sophomore Addie Cooper scored her fourth goal of the game late in the fourth quarter to make the final score 15-7.
“My assistants and I talk a lot about this particular group and they’re just overall the greatest kids,” head coach Ashley Means said. “They’re nice, they’re funny, and they are super hardworking and really diligent.”

"The exterior is still a nice monument to remember buildings [involved in] water history," Hoey said.
