On Wednesday, May 20, WiFi issues caused the rescheduling of the mathematics Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) for Wayland High School sophomores.
Sophomores took the first of the two mathematics MCAS sections on Tuesday, May 19. On Tuesday night, students and families received an email from Wayland High School Principal Allyson Mizoguchi stating that the second session will be postponed due to “significant internet issues.” Mizoguchi also stated that a new date for MCAS will be announced by the end of the day on Wednesday, May 20.
According to a statement provided by WPS Technology Director Jenn Judkins, the disruption was a result of a fire that caused fiber damage on the Framingham-Wayland line. Verizon, WHS’s service provider, anticipates full restoration by 1:00 p.m..
The statement also said that for the time being, Wayland High School is operating on a smaller “temporary failover line” and to expect slowdowns throughout the day.
WHS began to experience internet issues beginning near the end of the day on Tuesday. The inconsistent internet is ongoing and according to Instructional Technology Specialist Marc Lefebvre, the issue will most likely be resolved before Thursday, May 21.
The outage is expected to impact classes that rely on technologies, however classes should be able to run regardless.
“The teachers here know what good instruction looks like, and that doesn’t require the internet,” Lefebvre said.
