Boys team:
This year, the boys swim and dive team is entering the upcoming season trying to achieve the same goal as last year, which is winning the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Division II State Championship. However, the team lost several key seniors from last year, with two going on to swim at the college level. Swimmer Peter Morris is swimming for Bates College and WHS alum Brady Foley is swimming for Roger Williams University. Wayland lost six out of their top nine swimmers and two out of their top three, Morris and WHS alum Aidan Huang.
“I mean, we never say never [about winning the MIAA Division II State Championship this year], but we graduated a lot of guys last year,” head coach Mike Foley said. “[For] every kid returning and coming in, it’s going to have to be better than they were last year.”
With the loss of multiple swimmers, the team has new challenges to face, but are focused on the future success of the program. According to M. Foley, the freshmen class has some promising swimmers.
“We have a handful of [freshmen] with very good potential,” junior Luke Kroncke said.
Girls team:
At the end of last winter, the girls swim and dive team was ranked No. 25 in the Massachusetts region. Senior captain Cara Hill, a returning Wayland swimmer, hopes the girls team’s successes last year will carry over into the upcoming season, especially considering the freshmen’s skills. Hill aims to create a unified team environment, replicating last year.
“I feel like the teams are going to be very good this year,” Hill said.
A personal goal of Hill’s is to win the MIAA Winter North Sectional 100 backstroke again this year. Last year, Hill won the MIAA Winter North Sectional 100 yard backstroke race.
