Girls Hockey
The girls hockey team is entering the 2025-2026 season following a Round of 32 berth in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Division II tournament. Traditionally, Wayland has partnered with Weston for girls hockey, but this year, they are adding Newton South to the team, so it will be Wayland-Weston-Newton South.
“I think one of our goals is to get acclimated towards one another and get to know each other,” Wayland High School sophomore Drew Galizio said. “I think later into the season, we want to build on each other’s skills.”
This year, there are two Wayland sophomores and one freshman on the team. All of the captains are either from Newton South or Weston.
“We’ve had a few captain’s practices, so we’ve bonded at those,” Galizio said. “I think the bonding has been pretty good, everyone gets along well.”
Their first game is on Thursday, Dec.12, against Framingham High School at 4:50 p.m. at Loring Ice Arena in Framingham. Wayland’s home games are played at either Rivers School’s Loring Ice Arena or Ryan Arena in Watertown. Their full schedule can be found on Arbiter.
“Something that I learned from last year is to stay positive when even things are tough,” Galizio said. “I think that that’s really helpful and keeps everyone kind of tied together going into this season.
Boys Hockey
The boys hockey team is coming off of a successful 2024-25 season where they made it to the round of 16 in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Division III tournament. Functioning as a co-op with Watertown, the team finished with a record of 7-12-1.
This year, junior captain Adam Capello said that one of the team’s goals is to get another home playoff game in front of the Wayland-Watertown crowd. To get a home playoff game, they have to finish the regular season in the top 16 in Division III.
“It’s so fun playing at home, the atmosphere of the fans is amazing,” Capello said. “[A home playoff game] is definitely one of the goals that we have.”
Getting to the playoffs is no small task in itself. According to Capello, the team has some challenges that they will have to overcome.
“I think our biggest challenge is that physically, we have a small team,” Capello said. “But we make up for that by being fast and by moving the puck. We have great chemistry.”
This year, Wayland’s two captains are Capello and Senior Griffin Wood. With nine seniors graduating last season, Wayland will have to work through this season with a younger, smaller team.
Wayland’s first regular season game is on Saturday, Dec.13, at 3:00 p.m. at the Belmont Ice Rink. Wayland’s full schedule can be found on Arbiter.
“I think that by winning the games that we’re supposed to win and playing how we’re supposed to play we’ll have a good chance at making the playoffs,” Capello said.”I think that’s the way our team is gonna get us to the playoffs this year.”
