With winter sports in full swing, sophomore Campbell Powers has consistently delivered for the 4-1 girls varsity basketball team, making her this month’s Athlete of the Month.
Powers, a guard, said she has been playing basketball since she was 4 years old. According to Powers, her experience and dedication has played a part in the team’s strong start to the season. She said the team’s impressive record is largely due to teamwork.
“I think because we play as a team, we’re connected off and on the court, and it’s just very fun to play with the girls, especially with me and my sister [senior captain Sarah Powers],” Powers said.
According to head coach Timothy Glavin, Powers’s toughness and effort this season have made her stand out.
“Her effort has been really strong,” Glavin said. “She’s helped score points and play tough. Her biggest strength this season has been her passing ability.”
Powers’s personal highlight this season came in a 50-48 win against Marlborough on Dec. 30. Powers scored 24 points in the game.
“It was mostly just easy layups off the press, and it made me feel very nice,” Powers said. “It was very fun to come out of that.”
According to Powers, team chemistry, both on and off the court, has been another important factor behind the team’s successful.
“I would describe it as very, very entertaining and fun,” Powers said. “Everybody’s just very connected and kind to each other.”
Powers also highlighted parts of the team that don’t always get attention: defense and communication skills.
“Before every game, we do the Cupid Shuffle, and that’s how a lot of us try [to] lock in,” Powers said.
Looking ahead, Powers has goals for both herself and the team.
“For the team, I want to win over five games, because last year we went 4-16,” Powers said. “For myself, I’d say just growing as a person and as a basketball player.”
Powers added that her coaches are some of her biggest supporters.
“Both my coaches, Mr. Glavin and Coach Murphy are very helpful,” Powers said. “They’re both new, so it’s been really helpful.”
Because of her strong performances on the court, Powers has played a major role in the girls varsity basketball team’s success so far, earning Athlete of the Month honors.
